Elias: It's on me

Elias has said that he and his staff are (or will be) making an exhaustive inquiry to identify the sources of this team's underperformance -- which I take to mean not just the playoff defeats, but also the underperformance during the second half of the sentence. Sounds good.

But at the same time, before that investigation has gotten underway, Elias has announced that Hyde will be back next year. I believe many of the criticisms of Hyde's in-game decisions, lack of fire, failure to take action in response to boneheaded baserunning, etc., etc. -- including my own -- have been exaggerated. But Hyde does seem, to me anyway, to have shortcomings as a manager. I really don't know whether any of this team's problems could be alleviated by bringing in a new manager with qualities that Hyde lacks. But if Elias is serious about a top-to-bottom review of the team's weaknesses and ways that those weaknesses might be improved on, shouldn't the manager's stewardship  be among the subjects considered? It appears that Elias intends to scrutinize and look for constructive changes throughout the organization. Except the manager. I don't get it.

Elias and his team will also  analyze his performance but I doubt he will fire himself or Hyde.  Instead both of them will probably try to learn from those things that they did and that did not turn out well.  And take corrective active. JMO

I'm afraid I will have to see it to believe it. I have been disappointed way too many times to count.

The Baltimore Orioles are still one of the best teams in all of baseball.  They still have an awful lot going for them.  Unfortunately, the while the distance between World Series winner and close but no cigar is not that much in the overall win column during the season, the things they need to go right, and the things they need to do to improve are still pretty massive.

Compounding this is the fact that they can do everything necessary and it is still possible it won't work.  I don't say that as an excuse.  Elias is going to be measured by playoff appearances and the success that brings.  He has been engineer of two playoff teams and a near miss.  He still has as many wins with his near miss and his rebuilding teams in the playoffs as his two playoff teams.  It is certainly fine to criticize that.

Of course he says it is on him.  One because it is, and two because any good GM would do the same.  But the Orioles are no longer building towards being good.  They are good and no one is going to give them anything.  There is work to be done to make this team better positioned to compete in the post season.   And the Angelos family is no longer a hinderance.

I am as disappointed as everyone else and in general I am a root for the uniform not the player guy.  These guys have been fun to root for, but the second half and this playoff run was tough to stomach.  I hope that to give this team the chance to compete, they add a #1 TOR pitcher and another playoff caliber starter before the season starts.  I also hope they add a playoff experienced RH bat.  Trade, sign, whatever.  The window is open.  Whatcha gonna do?

What is unsettling to me is in how much better a position the team appeared to be in last year at this (approximate) time.

It is but for the exact same reason we were nervous going into the playoffs.  Everything about the team was different after June.  We literally expected win every series and usually did...and then it stopped.  And for awhile we focused on all of the injuries, but then even the people still here at times stunk.

The question is can they get it back.  I think they can, but even if we never know what happened or not, the team needs to figure it out.  And yes, for us...it will be hard to expect something different until we see it.  I mean, if we win 101 games and take the East, I expect many to still be nervous even if we have a MVP, ROY, CY Young all playing for the home team.

It's not the exact same reason.

Adley and Gunnar have a year of team control gone.

Means is gone and Bradish will probably miss the 2025 season.

Mayo and Holliday have lost that new prospect glow.

The farm system is significantly weaker.

I am concerned by guys like Gunnar.  That crap show he put on for a good three weeks where he threw EVERYTHING away was insane.  That was right at the time of the collapse.  Adley was sucking.  Gunnar was mega sucking.  It all was hell.  And it never got any better.  Gunnar only got like ten home runs in the second half of the season.  The suck was off the charts.

I mean kinda, but everything you list was known in June and going into the playoffs.  None of that is new.  I hoped for Adley and Gunnar to be 1st half versions of themselves but feared they would not be.  Mayo and Holliday glow was already dimmed.  Etc etc.

They traded a fair bit of depth out of the farm after June.

fair enough.  That bit of anxiety is different for sure.  And for many the anxiety is that we spent a lot and didn't get much.  Will see if that turns around any.
