Happy for Sabean. I think he is a very good GM. Quite a debate several years ago about how many here thought he was not such a good one.

Within the last few years the Giants have come up with some spectacular talent through the draft. Sabean gets the usual GM credit for those. Otherwise, I'm not impressed--and I'm speaking as a Giants' fan.

Sabean looked like a good GM this year because he had a payroll large enough to accommodate ridiculous FA contracts to Zito and Rowand. He and the Giants would have been in deep trouble if he'd had only $80MM to work with this year instead of $100MM.

And it sure didn't hurt that they were playing in the NL West.

Not that I am complaining this morning.

But at the same time, you can’t get too carried away. While it’s hard for some to resist calling good luck genius after the fact, I won’t be doing that with Brian Sabean. Most of the time depending on the waiver wire to patch holes midseason is going to backfire on you. Most of the time going into a season counting on aging sluggers like Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff isn’t going to pan out. Most of the time if your two most expensive players — Barry Zito and Aaron Rowand — are non-factors in your playoff push and postseason, you’ve failed as a general manager. Thanks to the pitching staff and some lightning in a bottle these things didn’t mortally wound the Giants, and while Sabean gets credit for the staff he shouldn’t get credit for the lightning.

This sums up my thoughts on Sabean pretty much perfectly.

Sure, the bar's not set too high in the NL West and Rowand and Zito are two awful contracts at $30M annually (for two more years), but let's give a GM some credit when it's due. It's not fair to complain about mistakes and then say it's luck when moves like Burrell and Cody Ross pan out or when Aubrey Huff pays off in spades - especially when guys like Sandoval go from a 2009 WAR near 5 to 1 in 2010. The mistake contracts are several years old. Clearly, Sabean pushed a lot of the right buttons in 2010 besides the three names above ... such as calling up Posey and Bumgarter at the right times , dealing Molina, and not dealing Sanchez, Bumgarter or Zach Wheeler at the trade deadline.

Why did he call those guys up at the right times? He calls Posey up at the beginning of the season, he might not have been ready...or they might have not had to win on the last day of the season to keep out of a potential three-way playoff. Same with Bumgarner.

Look, any GM that wins a championship did SOMETHING right. The problem is looking back with absolute hindsight and all of the moves he made were the right ones instead of ones that worked out. Because the more right moves you make, the more likely they are to work out instead of relying on luck.

Obviously there were elements of both luck and skill involved in the Giants championship but the major element of this team was it's starting staff and that is something Sabean gets credit for.

In spite of horrible contracts and good luck the fact is a team he put together won the World Series.
