De Aza is a keeper, imo. Lough could be a casualty, but I know they like his defense.

Brach has a spot in the bullpen, and I believe Hunter does too after scrapping his cutter and going to a power sinker.

Meek and Johnson are almost certain cuts, and Paredes (despite showing something with his bat in a SSS) is probably on the outside looking in because of his defense.

Considering Roch has already leaked that the Orioles and Markakis want to get a deal done for 2015.

I think it's safe to say he will be on the roster.

Indeed, but you know never can tell how a free agent contract negotiation goes. Things can go sour quick.

Lough and De Aza are hard to keep once Markakis signs, in my opinion. One will need to go.

Lough is making $510K a year, how is that hard to keep with De Aza?

sorry, what am I missing here?

Not the salary, the lack of options. They like to be able to send guys up and down, carrying a bunch of backup outfielders with no options is not Duquette's style (based on recent history).

They may start the year like that and just let one go if needed in season.

Webb is an interesting case to me. Signed as a high priority in the off season and then fell out of favor and was optioned later in the year. Getting him on track will be important.

He is interesting. On the other hand he is under contract so I think he will get a shot at making the roster. Could be a trade candidate although he doesn't have much value.

Lough might hang around because of his ability to play CF. A De Aza/Pearce platoon would be pretty productive in LF.

Only one would be a backup. Markakis would start in RF, de Aza would start in LF (or at least platoon with a RH hitter, like Pearce). Lough would be the backup outfielder.

So keep him on the roster, and see how he does in ST.

If he plays great, then you head north with him on the roster.

If he falters, then you DFA him and if nobody wants him, then you resign to a minor league contract.

I'm hopeful that if Davis in non-tendered that we'll find a full-time first baseman to replace him. As much as I like Pearce, I really think he had his career season and should continue to play in a part-time role.

The FA pickings at first are expensive and/or slim:

    • Didn't see today's game in it's entirety but I will say this.  I feel 100% more confident with Mateo playing second and turning  a DP rather than JH right now.  JH will be fine there.  In time.   But even forgetting his hitting, D wise he just isn't there yet.   And yes I know the metrics say he is fine.  But to me, using the eye test, he looked very shaky fielding and throwing,
    • I like Kevin.  He is constantly improving.  My only beef is that he doesn't seem to understand that a foul ball isn't always out of play.   A ball can be hit foul, but still be in the field of play.
    • My preferred day 3 WR would have been Troy Franklin, but he apparently had a bad combine on positional drills (which might have been because he had the flu.)  And he got picked by Denver pretty early.   Devontez Walker is kind of intriguing.  He's 6'2", barely.   A bit on the skinny side but ran in the mid-4.3s.  His route tree is pretty limited, mostly short quickouts/slants and go/post routes. But he's really good at the deep routes.  Sort of a discount DK.  He's reported to have good hands and good deep ball tracking ability as well.  We have to see how that translates in the pro game.
    • Adley looks way more energized and McCann is veteran catcher who is good defensively and handles the pitchers well.  Doesn't really make sense to wear Adley out when the O's are using him at the top of the lineup.
    • Just seems like a more controlled swing from the right side, shorter, flatter.
    • He was signed in the Covid year when they only had a 5 round draft, which is why he was undrafted.  Was showing promise bur tore his UCL in 2022.  Pitched a little last year, this is his first full year back.  Nice to see the good outing.
    • What's up with Brandon Young? Out of nowhere (#30 prospect above... undrafted?) he goes 3 IP with 0 hits or walks, and 7 Ks, throwing an otherworldly 26 of 31 pitches for strikes, in Bowie's game today.
