Not unexpected. Tigers are still in win now mode.

I would have liked Hunter in LF for Baltimore next year, but not at 13 million per. Detroit has put themselves in a postion where they will continue spending bad money in order to get a ring. There is nothing wrong with that as long as ownership is willing to foot the bill. On the other hand it is only a two year deal, not really the end of the world.

My thing is, several teams have shown a willingness to really spend crazy money to build these "super" teams, and for me it does not add up. Maybe I am alone on this, but when was the last time a team like this won the World Series? I want to see the O's open up the wallet this year but not for the sake of just spending.

Last Yankee title, after they added the top three free agents that offseason.

2009. They even made a movie about it.

In 2012 it's kinda funny. You have one team that mega splurged on big names (Angels) that somehow still missed the playoffs, and you have a team that spent a ton like Detroit that made it to the World Series. Mega spending definitely doesn't guarantee a WS title but can definitely be a sound strategy if you cherry pick the right FA.

2009 and before that 2001. Yes,it was nice to see the Diamondbacks end the Yankee Dynasty (seeing Jeter's face was priceless) but the fact remains that World Series was just as bought as the 09 one, even more so in a way.

The Tigers won 7 fewer games in 2012 than in 2011, and made the playoffs only because the rest of their division stunk. They had the 7th best record in the league. I don't think Detroit picked the "right" free agent, compared to the Angels (who won one more game than the Tigers), they just played in the right division.

As to the Hunter move, so long as they can afford him, it's not a bad move. He's better than Delmon Young, to be sure.

    • I don’t see how Norby could be worse than Kjerstad in COF. Therefore, with all our LHH, he will be a bench platoon player.  Notice how our bench players are already RH because of the amount of lefties?  McCann, Mateo, Urias, and McKenna. Norby will just replace one of them next year or he an up/down guy. Having three options, being RH, being cheap, and being able to stand at COF/2B, is more valuable than what he would bring back in a trade.  Reubilding teams want to take a shot on guys that can be everyday players. Norby is a role player for contending teams like us.
    • Because a team who has a Mason Miller/Felix Bautista or some other heavy strikeout pitcher will have an advantage. That’s not luck.
    • Holliday was a number 1 pick at SS.    Why do you think he will be average at 2nd?
    • What is the obsession with lumping in Henderson’s debut and acclimation into the league with Holliday’s? As if they are in anyway comparable. I feel like I’m the only one that watched Gunnar come into the MLB. He homered in his first game! He was OPS’ing .900 3 weeks in! In 2023 he was BARELY below LEAGUE AVERAGE offensive production in April with a 96 wRC+. He was above league average in May. All the while making his typical spectacular defensive plays. We would have killed for anywhere near those types of results for Holliday. And he would still be in Baltimore if that were the case.  I’m stunned at the amount of times Gunnar is listed as an analogy to Holliday’s start. If the analogy is “look how much better a player can get after half a season of adjusting” and not “you can be a bad player when you come up just like Gunnar was”. Boggles my mind!
    • Burnes (3-1, 2.61) faced the Nats twice last year, allowing 4 ER in 5.2 IP the first time, 2 ER in 6 IP the second time.   Bradish (1-0, 0.00) also faced them twice, throwing 14 scoreless innings.  Advantage, Bradish. Trevor Williams (3-0, 2.27) started against the O’s in 2017, allowing 1 run in 6 IP.  Michael Parker (2-1, 2.53) has never faced the O’s.    The Nats come in scoring 4.18 runs per game, 18th in MLB and a 100 OPS+, 16th.  The O’s are 2nd in R/G at 5.29 and 2nd in OPS+ at 122.  The Nats lineup features 5 hitters who are off to good starts: CJ Abrams (165 OPS+), Luis Garcia (160), Nick Senzel (143), Jesse Winker (134) and Jacob Young (119).  The rest of the lineup has been a bit of a black hole, all at 79 OPS+ or worse     The Nats’ bullpen ranks 16th in ERA at 3.81, while the O’s are 11th at 3.54.    The Nats have built their 17-17 record on a pretty easy schedule, -0.4 SRS per BB-ref.   The O’s 23-11 has come against the toughest schedule in the league to date, at +2.0 SRS. Time to show the Nats who’s the alpha dog in this region.
    • I hate watching baker pitch so much it invokes the worst feeling of bad oriole reliever moments in my lifetime. I’d rather watch Benitez give up gopher balls in the playoffs, Kevin Gregg try to earn every save, give me Doug jones or Mike Tillman over Brian baker. I legitimately question Elias’ talent discernment because baker is still in the organization.
