In 1996, the team was five games out in July. Gillick believed you needed to blow up the roster, dump Bobby Bonilla and David Wells because they wouldn’t be long-term Orioles anyway. You bristled. Give up? That wasn’t in your nature.

“That wouldn’t be fair to the fans of Baltimore,” you told him. “They’ve sold out the stadium for us for the rest of the year. They bought tickets with the idea that we’d try to field a contender. We’re not going to give up on them now.” Besides, who is Pat Gillick to say that this team can’t win? You called your kitchen cabinet, asking for advice. “You’ve got Gillick and [assistant general manager Kevin Malone],” hall of famer and current Orioles broadcaster Jim Palmer told you. “Ask them what they think.”

“I don’t trust them,” you replied.

“Why,” Palmer asked, “are they working for you?”

Thing is, you were right.

No, he wasn't, despite the urban legend. In the last two months of the year, 13 starts, Boomer Wells was 4-3 with an ERA of 5.87 in 76.2 IP. Gillick wanted to trade Bonilla for a 27 year old outfielder named Jeromy Burnitz*. Burnitz went instead to Milwaukee in an August deal. In the next five years, here are his OPS+ numbers, 140-118-143-106-119.

Wells and Bonilla were gone after 1996. Gillick also couldn't wait to leave town after his contract expired.

Crediting sources within the Cleveland organization, the News-Herald reports the first deal of Bonilla and Jeffrey Hammonds to Cleveland for Murray, Burnitz and minor-league pitcher Albie Lopez was vetoed by Orioles owner Peter Angelos; the Cleveland sources indicated their understanding was that Angelos didn't want to deal Bonilla now that he's hitting well, after an early-season slump.
