Mike Wright, 2014

Or he's just not a starter - which I recall many saying from Day 1.

You don't have a season like he did last year and then flounder like he has this year because you are "just not a starter." I'm pretty sure he pitched a great game in AAA in his final start of the year last year, after having an excellent year in Bowie. To drop off the table as badly as he has, something unusual is going on.

Another terrible outing by Wright. Why is he 1) still in the rotation 2) still at Norfolk

Of all our minor league developments this year, this is a real head scratcher.

Yeah, with a 6.22 ERA so far this year (and it seems every time he pitches, it's a disaster), I'm at a loss as to why he's still in Norfolk. He's clearly not ready for Baltimore because he's clearly not even ready for Norfolk. He needs to try his hand in Bowie, maybe finish the year there and MAYBE bring him back to Norfolk next year.

Mike Wright has had a weird season, but I do find some hope in his last 6 starts:

Jul 07 @DUR 0 1 3.00 1 1 0 0 0 6.0 4 2 2 1 1 8 1.75 .174

Jul 12 GWN 0 0 5.06 1 1 0 0 0 5.1 9 6 3 0 2 2 1.60 .375

Jul 20 ROC 0 1 11.57 1 1 0 0 0 4.2 7 6 6 1 2 3 0.22 .333

Jul 25 @COL 1 0 2.57 1 1 0 0 0 7.0 7 2 2 1 0 6 1.33 .259

Jul 30 @TOL 1 0 0.00 1 1 0 0 0 5.0 6 0 0 0 0 4 0.10 .286

Aug 04BUF 0 1 3.18 1 1 0 0 0 5.2 9 5 2 0 1 1 0.36 .375

That evens out to a 4.00 ER Awith one terrible (4.2 IP/6 ER) start thrown in.

His monthly ERA is weird:

April - 2.78

May - 7.85

June - 7.66

July - 5.08

August - 3.18 (1 start)

Mechanical issues at the beginning of May? An injury?

I still have hopes for Mike Wright to become a decent reliever for our team or a nice trade piece with a bounce back season next year.

Over his past 10 starts, he has been decent to very good in 8 of them. Overall, he posted a 4.05 ERA in those 10 starts, but it's heavily skewed by his two poor outings in which he allowed 12 ERA in 10.1 IP. Overall, he has shown me enough over the last 8 weeks or so that I am not completely giving up on the guy. Hopefully he can finish up strong. He should have about four more starts before the season ends.
