Still think O's were wrong on Balfour?

I have heard it mentioned a bit, here and there. No one has gone so far as to flat out declare the O's medical staff was correct.

I was initially under the impression that the Orioles nixed the Balfour contract due to medical reasons ...... period.

But I was reminded that that the Orioles didn't completely nix the deal ...... they simply cut it down from 2 years to 1 year.

In my rat's ass of an opinion, the Orioles should have taken a stand one way or the other. If their physical showed Balfour's health to be questionable, then should have simply nixed the deal, and be done with it. He's either healthy enough to pitch at the present time (and therefore sign a lucrative contract with a team, whether it be for one year, two years, or eight years), or he isn't.

That's why, as much as I would love to, I cannot blindly give the Orioles complete credit for being wise/prudent on this one.

Let me clarify. The Orioles had a two year agreement in place which became void when the DOCTORS suggested a one year deal only based on Balfour's physical. The Orioles were open to discussing a one year deal with Grant. His rage precluded those discussions.

OK thanks, Weams.

Still, I then question the doctor's proclamation ...... I believe that he (or any player, for that matter) should either be deemed damaged goods, or not damaged goods.

Perhaps Balfour didn't handle it in the best way, but taking his behavior out of the equation, a doctor(s) proclaiming him to be fit ...... but only for one year ...... sounds fishy to me.

Also, if Balfour continues to pitch as badly as he has been for the rest of this season, then the doctor's assertions are even more questionable, considering that they said that he was healthy enough to pitch for one year, but not two.

Or my theory? He's pitching damaged.

It is about how much risk the team is willing to take on.

It is perfectly reasonable to me that they were willing to risk the money and roster spot of a one year deal but not a two year deal.

Could be.

I admit that I don't know much about what exactly the Oriole doctor(s) said, and/or why they said it.

In any case, we're fortunate that we ultimately didn't waste a dime on him, considering how bad that he has been pitching for the majority of this season.

The Orioles are so fortunate Balfour's medicals were bad.

I believe that the Orioles offered to change the original 2-year contract offer to a 1-year deal after his medical results came back.

So, we were lucky on 2 counts ......

Lucky that the his medical showed something(s) questionable on them, AND lucky that Balfour threw a fit and told us to go to hell when we wanted to sign him for one year, instead of the original 2-year offer.

If Balfour had accepted our 2nd (1-year) offer, he would have gone north with us back in April.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
