Last-minute attempt by O's to sign ace holding up trade

My mistake. Just read the article stating 9-figures

I think after all this Bedard will want a no trade claus of some sort. Maybe a limited 5-7 team East Coast claus. If I were the Orioles I wouldn't grant it unless he would sign a deal in the 7 year/$85-90 Million range.

Whether MacPhail wants to extend Bedard is one thing. But a no trade clause would be a huge mistake IMO. If that becomes a sticking point then I would hope that the MacPhail holds his ground.

Seriously. I'm not trying to insult anyone on here- but this is getting ridiculous.

Last seson if at any point, the O's signed Bedard to an extension we would have been jumping for joy. Now that suddenly talks have started about a possible big trade- everyone wants the joy of making a splash in the off-season- as if that gaurantees future success.

You know the quickest way to be comptetitive again? STARTING PITCHING!

If we keep bedard- and Loewen stays healthy and matures further- as well as Cabrera and Guthrie... we have one of the top rotations in baseball IMO. Bring in some new blood and new leadership with Tejada's departure- and we may surprise ourselves.

I feel like I'm stomping a dead horse here- but this is getting downright ridiculous. And for all of you complaining about $100 million- have you seen Barry Zito's contract??? I'd say if we got that for 6 or 7 years- it'd be a steal! Add Tex next year if possible- and you just never know.

The Lakers were supposed to be mediocre again this year- but Andrew Bynum blew up- the same holds true in ANY sport...

Some of you get act as though you were promised a Nintendo Wii for Christmas- and then when you got Playstation 3 instead- you whined and whined cuz you alreday planned on what games you were going to get for the Wii....

Get over it- Bedard IS THE BEST GAME OUT!

99% sure. If the Orioles wanted to extend Bedard, then they should have gone after Andruw Jones and taken a whole other approach to this offseason.

Man, I hope you're right JTrea. Hopefully, we'll receive reports tomorrow that the deal has been finalized and a press conference is set for Friday.

MacPhail is stringing Bavasi along, plodding like the tortoise he is...

It also gives the fans an appearence of effort on our part. We did try tosign him before dealing him to Seattle. That way if the trade bombs on us we can look back and say he was leaving anyway so it was a calculated risk. Then again, maybe Angelos heard the dollar amounts being linked to Santana and thought, locking this guy up for 7 years/$100 Million may not be a bad idea. You back log the contract a little. If he is traded in a few years the team that trades for him would eat most of the contract.

The problem is we need a whole lot more than just Bedard and Roberts stays if Bedard stays, so that means our two best trading chips stay put. We don't have enough other chips to cash in to get any talent on the level of a Jones or Pie. And we are way too late into the game for FA.

Thus we will be in limbo trying patch holes with FA just like we've been doing for the past 10 years. It doesn't work. Meanwhile it will be great to see Bedard pitch but he'll just get more expensive as he ages, and he'll be pitching for a 4th place or maybe 5th place team throughout the length of the contract.

When you start with saying that pitching is the quickest way to contention and then list our other starters by named, followed by "If", it shows how far away from contention we really are.

    • You cannot bring up McDermott (25 years old) and discuss his one great quality and act like you have no idea why he hasn't been recalled.  One look at his numbers shows you plenty. He has thrown 70.1 IP, making 14 starts. That's 5 IP/start.  3.84 ERA, 1.464 WHIP, 5.5 BB/9, 12.9 K/9.  He has issues walking too many batters.  So, while he strikes out batters at a great rate, he also walks far too many, raising his AAA WHIP to 1.464.  That does not project well to the majors.
    • No one’s ever accused me of choking and bludgeoning them unconscious before. At the very best he makes extremely poor decisions about whom to associate with. That’s at the very best.
    • When a team loses 4 in a row the GM looks for where to improve. Hays.   .500.  2-4  2B Adley    .462  6-13.  2B Mullins   .417   5-12 2B, 3B Westburg .313  5-16.  3HR Gunnar  .272   3-11  2 HR Santander  .235  4-17 HR O'Hearn      .230   3-13 Mountcastle  .188    3-16 2B Mateo       . 125   1-8    HR McCann    .000   0-3 Cowser.   .000.   0-11 Urias         .000     0-13   Holliday would be the answer but he is on the IL.   Mayo?  More Hays, Less Cowser.   Mullins gets his everyday job back in CF.  Kjerstad would seem to take DH at bats from O'Hearn and Santander.  Santander is hitting .106 as a DH.  Mountcastle may need rest but that will hurt the defense.
    • Nightengale does not expect Luzardo to be traded because he went on the IL with a back problem.
    • .271/.758 in June after .136/.344 in May. Great to see him hitting again. I agree about the defense but he really can't afford too many months like May. He is up to 0.7 WAR which is impressive for as bad as he has been with the bat.
    • Consent ends when the ability to give consent ends.  For instance if someone is choked unconscious.
    • Mid-80's Don Aase rates a shoutout.    Modern tools I can in a few clicks find for 1985-86 fWAR gives him 7th MLB-wide as RP. It was as the Orioles were halfway from Cal celebrating with Eddie how it is great to be a young and a Baltimore Oriole and 0-21, but as a kid I remember him seeming a notch better than Tippy or Sammy or Stoddard. I learned today he collected the one win the Angels got in the 1979 ALCS.
