Really tired of Matusz...

People keep writing this, but it isn't true. He gave up a two run double to the first batter he faced James Loney WHO IS LEFT HANDED. He also gave up a massive two run homer to Matt Joyce WHO IS LEFT HANDED. Both pitches were AWFUL. He didn't get hit by just righties.

Buck left him in once he blew it to save the pen. It wasn't bad managing. It was good managing.

To be fair Nick's gotta catch that ball. He's so slow.

Matusz can't pitch to right handed hitting. We already know that. I'm not too upset he was hit bad while facing a bunch of RH hitters. That's on Buck IMO.

I am past tired of seeing Evan Meek. This guy can not pitch at the major league level anymore. Where is that 93-95 mph cutter he was throwing in the Spring?

I understand that the team needed arms for the weekend, with the double header on Friday. But Meek can't pitch, I don't understand why he keeps getting run out there to fail. There has to be someone else they could have called up...

None of this is on Buck. The team played well. His bullpen is not currently stout.

A lot of right fielders would have. I think that in that situation you got to lay out to try to catch it. be MAYBE a run?. pu up. What will it cost you if miss it -The wall is right behind you. You can see Adam coming to back you up.

I am too. There has to be someone who will take him.

I think he wants to start and isn't fully engaged. I have no proof, just a thought.

If I were another team, I would def take a flyer. Change of scenery might help.

I think the Orioles really need to admit to themselves that Matusz was a total failure as a draft pick.

They need to make objective decisions about players regardless of tgeir draft status.

Sadly, it would benefit the team greatly to simply release Matusz.

Think of all the other players we could have drafted instead.

No, Billy Rowell was a total failure as a draft pick.

Matusz is much more the of general failure type you see every year. 2.0 WAR over six seasons isn't impressive for a top 5 pick but it doesn't qualify as a total failure.

Starting Matusz would be like throwing gas on a dumpster fire. If somebody wants to take a flyer on him do they have a 2nd basemen ;)

Kind of like we saw today :mwahaha: It's WELL documented he can't get out RH batters and today he got hammered by the LH's

At the time I posted what you quoted, Matusz had just finished the 6th, and 3 of the 4 hits he gave up were against RH hitters. I don't expect him to get every lefty out. But yea he was bad today. I understand Buck's reasoning for leaving him in there after all the runs had scored, but 3 of the first 4 batters Matusz faced were RH hitters.

Gonzalez was pretty good right up til he got injured and has not bee good since. When Norris comes back he can go to the pen where he would be better though.

That is a very good suggestion. Only problem is, Ubaldo needs to got he pen too.

Get serious. Anyone who thinks Ubaldo is going to the pen is living in a fantasy land. There is nobody short of KG who has the upside that Ubaldo has when he gets going. No chance they put him in the pen. It will be and should be Gonzales if one of them is not traded

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
