I am hoping Ubaldo pitches a great second half, and we can trade his contract for something decent. It would still give us six starters next year with Bundy hopefully coming up.

The downside? We lose a very good player in JJ Hardy and spend the next 3-4 years with the Deivi Cruz's of the world shuttling through SS again if Manny can't handle it. And even assuming Manny can handle it, we now don't have a 3B.

We have no one in the system that can come up and play either 3B or SS. Flaherty can probably handle 3B defensively but obviously his bat isn't there.

Left side infield defense is the single biggest strength of this team, and you are almost certainly downgrading that strength by losing Hardy, even IF Manny can be as good defensively as Hardy. And I think that's a big if. Hardy does so many things well that aren't picked up by box scores or even advanced metrics. Catching short hops, making tags, positioning - can Manny do all of that? Maybe he can, I don't know. It's a risk - that is the point.

Hardy's agent comes to you this winter and says, we have a Jhonny Peralta type offer from another team. Hardy will give you a hometown discount of around 10%. We are looking for 4/48 from you. Do you do that deal?

Do people think that Gonzalez could handle closing in 2015? Britton may be an attractive trade chip used to acquire a bat. You'd still have a rotation of Tillman, Gausman, Chen, Norris, and Jimenez with Bundy knocking on the door.

I personally wouldn't want to see Gonzalez closing and in high pressure situations with no room for error. To me, one of his problems is not having an "out" pitch that is especially effective in getting out batters once he's ahead of them. Personally, I think Britton has done an absolutely amazing job, and why mess with something that works? If Britton hadn't stepped up this year to the extent that he has, I hate to think where we might be right now, or who we might have dealt in order to get an aging closer.

That's why I was asking for thoughts about Gonzalez as a replacement. Britton has done an amazing job and is relatively inexpensive. Some team may steeply overpay for him. We don't have too many trade chips. But it looks like we may have 6-7 SP options. We could move one into Britton's role and get a great position piece back.

I dont look for Bundy to be a SP until 2016.

I see Bundy following along the lines of Gausman, we should see him this Fall, and then next year, ride the Norfork shuttle back and forth as needed and then given a chance to start in 2016, and maybe not being a SP out of ST, maybe during the year.

He did reference both Clippard and Storen.

The main thing with Clippard is he had three consective seasons and had an ERA over that time of 2.5 Britton has an ERA at 3.86 if you count the previous two years and this season. So I would think he would get no more then Clippard though the saves will help him.

Tyler Clippard in his first year of arbitration got 1.6 million from the Nats and Drew Storen got 2.5 million after recording 43 saves. Britton though great this year does not have the same track record those guys did though. He will be helped by the more saves but I can't see him getting to 2 million.

I think they try and make Tilman a long term deal if he pitches pretty well in the second half. I would offer the contract that San Fran gave Madison Bumgarner as a good comp. Madison had one more year before arbitration yet then gave him 5/35 million. I would offer Tilman 5/40 million. 3/7/8/10/12 deal.

This will be Tillman's first year of arbitration. The way DD as been playing it, it seem a little early for a multi year contract for Tillman.

What kind of contract can you give Hardy this off season that keeps him here, but doesn't make his $$$ too much for a another team to trade for him next year before he likely declines?

I have to think with Manny here that will always make Hardy an attractive trade commodity for the Os if the season doesn't look like it is now. In fact, I suspect the FO figured on moving Hardy this year under the right (wrong) circumstances but the team is leading the division.

There is almost no chance Bud Norris is an Oriole next year. He's going to be worth $8M. The Orioles will not give him that. I guarantee it.

Tillman, Chen, Gausman, Bundy, and Gonzo are all much cheaper. And Ubaldo isn't going anywhere.

So DD signs Jimenez for 11-13 per year but will not give Norris 8M when Norris is pitching better than Jimenez. Doesn't sound right to me.
