Much Deserved Separation in the Standings

JR Oriole

As I pointed out in another spectrum, the other side of the success coin speaks very well of the Orioles ........ avoiding losing streaks.

The Orioles have not lost 2 games in a row in 33 games.

The last time that the Orioles lost 2 games in a row was on June 28th and June 29th, against the D-Rays.

Of the many positive attributes that this team has, putting a loss behind them is right up there with any of the others.

Actions speak louder than word. Any manager, any player will always say, "We just have to put this loss behind us."

PROOF that you can indeed put said losses behind you bear out in the results on the field. And going 33 consecutive games without so much as a 2-game losing streak certainly bears that out.

Make that 37 consecutive games.

The Orioles have gone 37 consecutive games without so much as a 2-game losing streak.

No sexy 8 or 9-game winning streaks so far this year, but they sure as hell stem the bleeding of a loss pretty well.

38 consecutive games without back-to-back losses.

And the streak was finally stopped at 40 games last night ......

That's almost 1/4 of the season.

Here's to hoping that the Orioles run off another similarly long streak of avoiding back-to-back losses.

They're 2-0 since their back-to-back losses to the Indians on Friday and Saturday.

I just scanned the Orioles' entire season.

They have no 3-game losing streaks, and three 4-game losing streaks:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BAL/2014-schedule-scores.shtml

All three 4-game losing streaks occurred in the first 2 months of the season ...... the last of which occurred on May 30th, at which point the Orioles dipped one game below .500 for the last time this season, at 26-27.

Since that last 4-game losing streak in late May, the Orioles have gone 47-25.

Again, the Orioles haven't had any extremely long winning streaks of 8 or 9 games this year, but they also have avoided any bonafide losing streaks since early in the season. Since then (May 30th), all of the Orioles' losing streaks have been either one or two games.

3-game losing streak snapped tonight.

Still 6 games up on the Yankees in the division.

It would take a week for the Yankees to catch the O's in the standings and there are fewer than 5 weeks left in the season. Time to string together a solid 9-1 or 8-2 stretch to run out the clock.

I like the football analogy. This is like being up by 2 TDs at the start of the 4th quarter. You just need to put together long drives ending with points, and not give the other team any ideas. Be as boring as possible.

If the O's go 16-16 the rest of the way they finish 91-71. The NYY would have to go 23-9 to match that. That's .718 baseball over 5 weeks. If the O's go a modest 19-13 over their final 32 games, the Yankees would have to play over .800 ball. This is entering the realm of long shots. But, it's not clinched yet.

7 games up on the Yankees in the division.

I was watching the 9th inning of the Yankees-Tigers game on YES today. Kay and Singleton kept talking about the impact of that game on the Yankees position for the postseason, BUT they only talked about the wild card. Even they know that the division is pretty much out of reach.

Of course they do. They Yankees are what we thought they were.
