Do the Orioles give Jeter a parting gift?

Ok. Then give him 75 percent of whatever they gave Cal. He was a good Yankee. Nothing real special to me otherwise. Not nearly Cal.

Give him whatever everyone gave Bob Grich.

Horrible comparison, even if the certain stats line up. Jeter played his whole career in one city albeit NY and was a postseason legend for ability to come up big hits at big times...something that Grich was lacking. Not to mention the fact Grich di not even crack 2k hits for career were Jeter is over 3k (6th all time). Appreciating other players is appreciating the game. Comparing Grich and Jeter makes no sense whatsoever. Longevity matters.

When guys have legendary careers you don't gauge their sendoff based how legendary they were comparative to the next guy. You just give them a nice send off as a thanks for the memories.

Are you saying that Jeter wouldn't normally be deserving of gifts/accolades, but he's just riding Rivera's coattails?

What makes Jeter any less deserving than Rivera? He's had an even better career.

Rivera was only a closer. At least Jeter suited up. Mostly.

WAR takes into account longevity. It measures value. Not attendance.

The Orioles presented Mariano Rivera with his latest retirement gift as he makes a final pass through the American League, honoring the longtime Yankees closer in a pregame ceremony on Thursday night at Camden Yards.

Baltimore commissioned a sculpture depicting a baseball shattering a bat, following a theme echoed by several other clubs in paying tribute to the all-time saves leader. Rivera was hugged on the field by Orioles manager Buck Showalter, who was his first big league skipper with the 1995 Yankees.

"Definitely, I was glad that he was there," Rivera said. "I said, 'Thank you for being there, thank you for everything.' That was special for me."

The Orioles said that the sculpture was produced by Omri Armany and his son, Itamar, of The Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany in Highland, Ill. They have produced numerous other sports-related pieces, including sculptures of Michael Jordan and Vince Lombardi.

The bronze was cast at the Alchemist Foundry in Kalamazoo, Mich., and had an accompanying plaque reading:

"Baseball's all-time saves leader who pitched 19 seasons for the New York Yankees. His numerous baseball records are surpassed only by his humility, respect and philanthropy.

"Presented by the Baltimore Orioles, in recognition of his tremendous career and the hundreds of bats he broke along the way."

I assume we will do something along these lines for Jeter. Maybe a sculpture of a ball just eluding his glove.

Or faking an injury when acting like the pitch hit him, when it didn't.

They could always go with the classic Jeter, arching his back to get out of the way of a pitch that isn't within a foot of hitting him.
