Parra FA Stock Watch

I like what I have seen but his history troubles me a little.

In 5 of his 6 previous seasons he has only had an OPS+ >100 ....one time. By comparison Markakis did have an OPS of >100 in 5 of the 6 prior seasons going into free agency.

That is a little concerning and makes me wonder if he really worth 10+ million AAV over 4 years?. My concern is you sign him, your paying for the guy who put up numbers this year but getting a guy who put up worse numbers than Markakis albeit a couple years younger.

Still on the fence here on Parra but my gut tells me your buying high if you sign him this offseason.

Here is a difference between the two: at the same age, one was declining while the other seems to be improving.

That's a good point. Kakes had his power numbers earlier in his career. Parra seems to be the upswing.

With that being said, Parra has just displayed power this year, so we can't be certain it's sustainable or just a career year.

But, we have to take risks somewhere and I think Parra maybe a good one...

If there is one thing I know, it is that the Os will make good decisions regarding the outfield for a second straight year. It's not like we DFA'd a bunch of guys (De Aza, Lough, Young, Reimold, Snider, Parmalee) this year or anything who DD thought was the answer.

I think the chances are high that we sign him for close to what Cruz got - prices are going up, and that's something they should have foreseen. The good thing is we don't have to look for a RFer this offseason, and he's a solid player.

Seriously, you think Parra (career .737 OPS) is worth anything close to Cruz (career .850)? Aside from his first half this year, Parra is basically Travis Snider with better speed and arm.

Totally not true. Travis Snider can't pull MLB level pitching. He's done. He may have had a hot streak last year against NL pitching but he nowhere near that player. Parra is basically Markakis with better range, more power, more speed and a little less OBP and AVG.

I don't know what is wrong with Snider this year, but his overall OPS is about the same as Parra. Parra is closer to Snider than he is to Nelson Cruz, who led MLB in HR's and OPSed .859 prior to signing in contract.

I like Parra, always thought he'd develop into a nice 20/20 type guy with solid OBP.

That said, I am not comfortable giving him more than 3/24-30. Anything over 10 per for a player who was a low .700 OPS guy his first five years just seems extremely risky.

Want to see something weird. Go to Baseball Reference and type in De Aza's and Parra's stats. The career .OBP,.SLG and .OPS are exactly the same.

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
