Tender Updates (Janish, Lough Non-Tendered)

This has nothing to do with money. Just simply waiting until now to more easily remove them from the roster.

To me the non tender date is the time to get rid of player(s) you don't want to pay. That is Matusz and Janish IMO. Its not hard to DFA a player.

I think after the non tender deadline the O's DFA players to make space when they add other players. They sign Pedro Alvarez, then Paredes might go. They sign Kazmir, then Johnson may go. JMO.

Navarro is hitting pretty well in winter ball. I think they give Berry more time to develop. The O's need lefties.

The vast majority of players NT are for cost purposes. All I am pointing out is that teams are also using it to remove prearb players more often now.

And Berry has one option year left and looks like he won't even be ready after this coming year. I dont know how he has managed to survive this long.

Flash can't play SS. Buck stopped playing him there last season.
He plays SS, just not as well as Janish or Manny. So he played Janish at SS v LHP and Manny at SS v RHP, with Flaherty the better hitter v RHP, at 3B where he is a stronger defender than at SS.

This may not be a popular idea and given his reputation in the organization, it's unlikely, but is it at least possible that Flaherty gets non-tendered? It depends on how much money the team wants to save, but non-tendering Flaherty could save $1M if they fill the spot with Janish or someone like that.

I'm okay with non-tendering Matusz, but then who becomes the situational lefty? Do you sign/trade for one? If so, would the cost be greater than the $3.5M or so Matusz will make?

The Os resigned Cabral to a minor league deal. And have a few LHP that could be tried in the role.

I have to think Matusz has some trade value.

I doubt Matusz has much trade value considering his salary. If he did better vs righthanded hitters he would. But that is not where Matusz is performance wise.

On the other hand Flaherty should bring back a decent minor leaguer in trade if his salary is 1.5m.

I'd never pay a pretty decent specialist-ish reliever what Matusz will make, so I'd certainly never trade anything of value for him. I'd have long since non-tendered Matusz and began collecting random lefties for the staff to go through in a few months. I suppose other real GMs might disagree.

Tim Dierkes of MLBTR lists these O's as non-tender candidates:

Flaherty

Janish

Lough

Reimold

Worley

He is not predicting these, just stating they are worth considering as non-tenders.

Only Janish and Lough should get non tendered. We've seen what Lough can do. At this point Alvarez could play a little center depending on the roster makeup and is coming off a relatively decent AAA season.

I would normally agree with you, but given how we are so reliant on the bullpen, I don't see how we could lose O'day and Matusz in the same offseason. We just don't have the lefties in the system to replace him this year. Plus, the optimist in me, says that Matusz has a little bit of a bigger role next year and excels. He's a nibbler just like how Arrieta used to be. If only he would stop that.

You'd nibble, too, if you once had a season where you allowed 18 homers in 49 innings.
