Norfolk Tides

Norfolk used a big day from Audry Perez and a six-run seventh inning to rally past the Gwinnett Braves 9-4 Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.

Making his first start of the season, Perez finished with four hits and four runs batted in to power the Tides to their first win of the 2016 campaign. The 27-year-old backstop doubled in the second inning, drove in two with a bases loaded single in the third, then gave the Tides the lead with a bases loaded double off of Madison Younginer in the seventh. He capped his afternoon with a single in the eighth inning as he tied his career-high for hits in a game, most recently accomplished in 2011 with Double-A Springfield.

The Tides trailed the contest 4-3 entering the seventh frame, but Norfolk sent 11 men to the plate against Ian Krohl (0-1) and Madison Younginer in the inning to take the lead. Perez lined a one-out, two-run double to give the Tides a 5-4 lead, and Michael Almanzar followed one batter later with a two-run double of his own to extend the advantage to 7-4. Three batters later Christian Walker grounded a two-run single into left field to cap the scoring and give Norfolk a 9-4 lead.

Walker, who walked twice in addition to his two-run single, has now hit safely in all four games to open the season, batting .400 (6-15) with a home run and five RBI.

Norfolk starter Terry Doyle allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings of work in his season debut. The 30-year-old right-hander, who led Orioles minor leaguers with 16 wins in 2015, yielded all four runs in the fourth frame, as Ryan Lavarnway and Rio Ruiz had consecutive two-out, two-run hits with two-outs in the inning.

Zach Phillips (1-1) earned the win after striking out three in a scoreless inning of relief, with Pedro Beato and Oliver Drake both hurling a shutout inning to wrap up the win.

Despite a late rally, the Baysox fell to Akron 5-4 Sunday afternoon to allow the RubberDucks to complete the rain-shortened three-game series sweep. The Baysox twice trailed by four runs in the game, but were able to score three runs late in the game against the Akron bullpen to nearly complete the comeback.

Baltimore Orioles RHP Kevin Gausman made the start for the Baysox on a Major League Rehab Assignment. He pitched two innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out two and walking one in the loss. RHP Parker Bridwell pitched four innings behind Gausman.

Akron got on the board first in the top of the third inning against Gausman. After singles from Eric Stamets and Clint Frazier, Bradley Zimmer reached on a fielding error by second baseman Corban Joseph that allowed Stamets to score and give the RubberDucks a 1-0 lead.

The RubberDucks added to the lead in the top of the fourth inning against Bridwell. After singles from Jordan Smith and Alex Monsalve, Todd Hankins hit a three-run homer to left field to extend the Akron lead to 4-0.

The Baysox got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning against Akron starter Michael Peoples. Drew Dosch hit a two-out double to right field, moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a Glynn Davis single to make the score 4-1.

Hankins hit his second home run of the game to left field - this time a solo shot - to give Akron a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning.

The Baysox rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Akron bullpen. Reliever Justin Brantley hit a batter and walked two more to load the bases with no outs. Adrian Marin then singled to bring home a run before Louis Head replaced Brantley on the mound. Drew Dosch and Glynn Davis then each brought home a run to cut the Akron lead to 5-4.

The Frederick Keys rallied late, but could not overcome a four-run Myrtle Beach fourth inning, as the Pelicans earned a 7-5 win on Sunday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Park. With the win, the Birds earn a split of the four-game series.

Trailing 7-5 in the ninth, the Keys loaded the bases against Daury Torrez. With one out Cam Kneeland doubled, before Daury Torrez walked Jomar Reyes and Austin Wynns. Pelicans manager Buddy Bailey went back to his bullpen, calling on Jose Rosario to face Jonah Heim. The Myrtle Beach righty went to a full count against the Keys catcher, but eventually got Heim to fly out to end the game.

Frederick grabbed the initial lead of the game in the top of the fourth, as Wynns hit a three-run homer off Erick Leal. However Myrtle Beach countered against Keys starter Chipper Smith. Yasiel Balaguert singled to start the inning, while Jason Vosler walked to put men at first and second. Two batters later, Jeffrey Baez singled to load the bases and Cael Brockmeyer walked to force in a run. With the bases still loaded, Shawon Dunston Jr. cleared the bases with a triple to put the Birds up for good.

Smith (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. He walked three and struck out six.

In the seventh, the Pelicans added three more runs against Tanner Scott. After Charcer Burks walked to open the frame, Ian Happ tripled his teammate home. Balaguert followed with a single, before Vosler doubled to complete the scoring.

Down 7-3, the Keys added two more runs in the eighth as doubles by Reyes and Tad Gold and an RBI single by Anthony Caronia set the Keys up for a possible ninth inning comeback. Gold and Caronia combined on half of the team?s 10 hits.

Leal (1-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out two. Rosario earned the save, retiring Heim in the ninth.

The Delmarva Shorebirds earned their first series victory of 2016 with a doubleheader sweep of the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal Stadium on Sunday. An offensive explosion propelled Delmarva to a 7-4 win in Game 1, while Cristian Alvarado and Robert Strader combined to toss the Shorebirds? second shutout of the season in a 3-0 Game 2 victory.

Catcher Alex Murphy came up big in Game 1, as his three-run double broke the game open and gave Delmarva a 7-0 lead as a part of a five-run fourth inning. Murphy added two more hits and an RBI in Game 2 to bring his average for the season through four games to .500 (7-for-14) with four doubles and seven RBIs.

The Shorebirds struck early in Game 1, as D.J. Stewart notched his first RBI of the season with a double that scored Ademar Rifaela. Steve Laurino then knocked home a run in the second inning with a single. Drew Turbin also added an RBI as a part of Delmarva?s big fourth inning.

While the Suns were able to get four runs back in the bottom of the sixth, Christian Turnipseed came on and shut the door with 1.2 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the year. He has yet to allow a run in 30.2 innings as a professional. Cory Jones made his Delmarva debut in the game, where he allowed an unearned run on four hits in four innings while striking out four.

Game 2 belonged to pitchers Cristian Alvarado and Robert Strader. Alvarado twirled five shutout innings in his first career start with Delmarva while allowing just four hits and a walk. Strader allowed one hit in two innings while striking out three to pick up his first save.

Offensively, the second game began in similar fashion, as Rifaela opened the scoring in the first by scoring on a wild pitch. Murphy then drove in Ricardo Andujar with a single. The Shorebirds? final run of the contest came in the top of the second when Stewart drew a bases-loaded walk.

Alex Murphy is raking. He looked great at the plate last season before his injury, so it makes sense why he's back in Delmarva. Question is whether or not he's a potential ML bat or if he's a potential ML bat for a catcher. I don't know if he can play another position or if they're content letting him improve at the position the way they did for Caleb.
