Manager Decisions Thread

Three Run Homer

Recommended Posts

I didn't see one of these for this season, and tonight seems like a good time (or an infuriatingly bad time) to start one.

I can't think of any possible justification for Buck to send Gallardo out for a 7th inning. Even if Brach is unavailable tonight, it would have made much more sense to start the inning with TJ (since the leadoff hitter was a lefty), or to send out Dylan Bundy to start the 7th. When you get 6 IP 2 ER from Gallardo throwing in the 80s with a lot of hard hit outs, you quit while you are ahead.

I also think Buck should have walked Odor with 2 outs and a base open. Givens is having big problems with lefties this year. Obviously the O's are missing Matusz (and Givens should be sent to Norfolk whenever Matusz comes back, to work on something to improve against lefties).

I have to agree with you here.

99% of the time, I think the criticisms of pitching changes, or the lack therof, are hindsight.

But Gallardo at 96 pitches I believe it was through 6th, shouldn't be coming back out.

Didn't make a lot of sense.

I was honestly questioning if Gallardo should even have been brought out for the 6th, let along the 7th. I really have no idea what Buck was thinking.

And then to let him face DeShields again, who had nearly hit 3 HRs against him in the previous AB alone....

Very odd decisions from Buck.

He took a big picture approach tonight when tomorrow is more than likely getting rained out. I don't get it myself but I think that was the reason.

Perhaps he also wanted to see TJ in a big spot vs lefties and didn't want to burn an arm for 2 batters to start yet inning. As I said in the game thread he manages differently later in the year.

Buck loves trying to squeeze outs from his starters. Problem is we have a bunch of No. 4 and 5 types. If they manage to survive 5 or 6 innings, YANK them unless they are absolutely cruising.

Just a tone deaf decision tonight with Gallardo.

Those 96 pitches were some of the laborious 96 pitches I've seen... helped enormously by fantastic defense to get out of jams.

You have to be smart enough to recognize that just because he was under 100 doesn't mean he wasn't laboring. One of the rare head scratchers Buck makes during the season.

Fantastic defense otherwise it's probably another poor outing by Gallardo. Once again he got hit hard. Got lucky. Buck got greedy. And then instead of putting in a good reliever, he put in someone who notoriously allows inherited runners to score. Easily Buck's worst game of the season and it's not even close. I'm curious what BS excuse we will have from Buck post game. Probably something inane like trying to stretch these guys out. But he didn't have a good feel for this game. 11 base runners in 6 innings is awful.

Buck's never managed Gallardo before. He needs to determine where the line is, how much rope he can afford to give him. Does he need to go get him at the first sign of fatigue or can Gallardo work through it and close out the inning for him? Can he take Gallardo's word for when he's done, or is he the kind of pitcher who needs to be yanked against his will sometimes?

I probably wouldn't have sent him out there for the 7th either. But I'm not the manager, I'm not the one who has to deal with Gallardo on a daily basis, and I'm not the one who has to relate to him on a personal level, earn and keep his respect and trust, and keep him inspired and motivated. I think Buck was willing to take that chance in order to learn more about how he needs to manage Gallardo for the rest of the next two seasons.

Same as Tillman the other night. Buck is trying too hard to stretch these guys because the bullpen is taxed. I think it is time to consider an 8 man pen, although that would mean getting rid of one of Pedro, Kim, or Reimold.

I think Tillman was sharp the other night, Gallardo wasn't tonight. Tillman had some terrible luck. Gallardo is a 5-6 inning pitcher, we all know that so I am sure Buck does as well.

This one is on Buck. Was at the game and furious when he kept YG out there. Then even more so when he left him in after walking the 9 hole hitter on 4 pitches. He had been on the tightrope all night and Deshields had a few good ABs off him; not having someone ready was inexcusable. Moreover, the game tomorrow will not be played (forecast is a mess) and we are off on Monday - use your wipeout bullpen and don't unwin games that should be won.

Very frustrated with the poor excuse for managing tonight.

    • I think at $5 million he's an insurance policy that can go to the pen if need be. I'd rather not go into spring training with him penciled into the rotation. But I also don't want Trevor Rogers penciled in either.  He also could be a bridge until Bradish is ready.
    • So to all of you saying you would bring him back…. GRod, Eflin, Kremer, Felix, DC, Webb, Soto, Dominguez, Akin and Cano That leaves room for 3 more pitchers and this doesn’t include McDermott, Rogers or Povich. 3 spots left, 1 high end reliever and 2 starters. Which of those 3 spots do you want him at or, who do you take off the above list and keep Suarez over?
    • I went to a few games this year, but here are the reasons I didn't go to the WC games: The team had been an absolute bummer to watch for 3 entire months out of the season and to be honest by the time the playoffs got here I was exhausted and annoyed. The brand of baseball they had been employing for half the season (over-reliance on the home run, terrible ABs, iffy defense) frankly sucked to watch, even on TV, and I'm already spending money to watch them on TV. I wanted them to prove they could get past the WC round before I shelled out more money. I imagine a lot of people share these reasons with me.
    • People whining about 41k attendance and blaming it on the city have no idea what they're talking about.  Why were there 47k+ of Game 1 against the Rangers last year? Did the city all of a sudden not matter then? It was also a day game. Alas, it was on a Saturday. And they had that locked up for awhile. Why has attendance went up YoY? Look at the Astros and the Brewers. They had *less* people at their G1 games. Is Milwaukee not a nice city? Is Houston not a nice city?  This is pretty simple. It was a day game during a weekday with crappy weather coming off a pretty lackluster performance going into the playoffs. And folks didn't know if there'd even be a home game until, what, barely a week before?  People like winners. Miami is an awesome city. They got a new stadium when it first opened. But guess what? That team stunk in fairly short order upon stadium opening and attendance tanked.
    • Would love to bring him back on a 1 year deal for anywhere from $3-$7m.  Great depth arm. Don't pencil him into the 5th starter role. This club needs to pickup two starters: a TOR arm and a BOR arm. Have an open competition for the 5th spot. If Suarez doesn't make it, he'd be a great middle reliever arm. Open competition between Free Agent, Suarez, Povich, McDermott, and Rogers. Do not just go into 2025 penciling Rogers into any role.
    • It's really tough to set a top priority when I don't know what the budget is. I think the new ownership group will be investing more than the previous regime, I just don't know by how much. I highly doubt the O's will ever be in the "spend whatever it takes mode" like the Mets a couple years ago or the standard yearly overspending by the Dodgers or Yanks. It's still tough to make my Christmas list without knowing the balance sheet. If we're the Dodgers, we keep Burnes and Tony Taters. Hopes and wishes it is then: Even if we sign Burnes, which I wouldn't mind at least making a run at him, I think we need another starter, because injuries and how this year went. Even if the Mountain returns healthy, we need high leverage help in the pen. Veteran bat - no idea who, but if Mullins and Santander leave, we will have to add someone -- I don't know that our prospects will be stepping up or stepping back next year.
    • What I like about Webb is he has an excellent changeup and can get LHB's out. Besides Felix, everyone else in the bullpen needs to be matched up. I think it is important to have another reliable guy who can be brought in to any situation. He is also cheap. I think he is too valuable to just give him away to another team. I like him better than Perez for sure.
