Why T.J over Worley?

I mentioned this in the gamethread and was interested in the board's thoughts. I really felt strongly that Buck should have gone to Worley instead of a T.J. It was a close game for 2 innings (tied and then we had the lead) which should have given Worley enough time to warm up. I know T.J. was warming up earlier in the game when it looked like it was going to be a blow out but is he really someone we should be wringing our hands about? Besides, like I said earlier we were tied and then had the league. I'd rather sent my best longman out there in that situation to bridge the gap. Now we have Worley available tomorrow but it's very possible that Ubaldo could put us in a huge hole early by the time we'd go to Worley.

Why not Weiters pinch hitting for Pena? I love Buck, but a lot of head scratchers today.

I covered it in game thread but will do again. Buck is conservative with catchers this early in season. Later on in year he hits for him, wanted him to have full rest.

Worley did make more sense but he already had TJ up. The has to be reason.

He's saving Vanimal in case he needs to get five innings out of him tomorrow.

If Tillman was going tomorrow you would have seen Worley.

I understand the logic, but if we're trying to win the division every game counts and a couple of extra innings catching wouldn't kill Weiters.

Rest him tomorrow if the game goes to extras. Every game counts!

Right, I agree. I also agree he would have been a better option than TJ today.

This is team a year ago this month sent Chen down for a start to "rest" him which was a lie because they didn't want him facing the Jays and right now we have 2 mediocre lefties with a worn out pen vs same team.

Man, this having to assume 3/5 starters are probably going to go up in flames by the 5th or 6th is going to get old quick. Already is, in fact.

I know this team is still playing near- .600 ball, but it just feels like when Wright, Wilson, or Ubaldo start there is like a 75 percent chance we are going to lose unless the the offense goes off.

I know the numbers don't bear this out but it is just what I feel on those days.

Buck just covered it. Matt hasn't caught 4 games straight yet, it is still early.

I think Buck must have decided by the 5th or 6th inning (maybe long before then) that tomorrow's game is more winnable (hope he's right) and he wants to have as many weapons available tomorrow as he can. It would have been interesting to see how he reacted if the Orioles had closed to within a run in the 8th.

I was surprised to see Wright in the 6th, but I don't think that was a terrible move. Buck was hoping to squeeze an inning (or part of one) out of Wright against the bottom of the BJs' order, proving his lack of confidence in the LHed relievers. I really don't get not hitting for Pena, whether Weiters to save a player or Alvarez toi reduce the DP likelihood. The only reasoning I can see is that the game might go extra innings with Weiters stuck catching. But if that had happened, Pena could catch tomorrow.

The Orioles haven't used McFarland in a while. They're saving Worley to back up Ubaldo. It makes sense to me, it's just a bad result.

I am hoping that the additional day of rest will be good enough for Worley to possibly pitch as many as 4 innings tomorrow ....... if necessary.

If you're leading in the 6th inning, then by definition the game is winnable, and you have to try to win.

Just an avalanche of bad decisions by Buck today. Sending Wright out in the 6th when he was already over 100 pitches, sending TJ out instead of Vance Worley, leaving TJ in to face Donaldson and Encarnacion when he clearly has no command, and then letting Pena hit for himself in the 8th.

But why would it be more winnable? The O's were tied and then had the lead. Do really think Ubaldo against the Jays is going to have better chance then being tied and then having the lead in the 6th?

    • But again, nothing you say here changes anything. This team is going to be built from within. They are not going to try to build any other way…and they are right about that. This doesn’t mean they don’t need to spend but again, those guys will supplement the roster. And don’t think they won’t talk about how they added guys at the deadline for 2025. That they are “like free agent signings”.
    • It was the holder, not the kicker.  Jackson may not be perfect, but he's far from the problem this year. He's got a fumbling issue that may at some point cost this team a game or two, but there is no doubt he's playing some good football right now.
    • Yeah I'm surprised that Cleveland has been this bad. They were good last season.
    • Gunnar also signed a one year contract.
    • The when is really two questions.  One is when do the O's stop being handicapped by the risk-averse mindset that's governed their behavior since 2018, and the second is when does a 74 year-old billionaire tire of being told he has to wait a little longer because Jackson Holliday needs to further refine his new toe-tap?  Oh, and we also need to nail down a position for Coby Mayo, and so on.  No question?  I think the questions are numerous and many of them pretty important, and because they're so important, I think we'll start seeing a change in approach beginning this offseason.  I certainly hope so. Nothing I've said disputes the need for internal development or diminishes the role our current core of young players - some of whom haven't exactly made a seamless transition - will need to play for sustained success.  Nor is it a call for stupid FA spending.  It very much is an argument that time needs to be thought of differently now that two very successful regular seasons are behind the O's and the huge impediment of Angelos ownership is no longer a factor.
    • If he wants to join Hyde’s staff in some capacity, I’d be fine with that. Or are you actually talking about him being on the team as a player?
    • So why would you have sought payment if you were owner as you previously stated?  Since you are not known for being litigious and all? Also as I am sure you’re already aware the media exclusivity rights in Vegas are already shared by 6 major league teams. Which clearly was not the situation in DC as the territory was expressly the territory of the Baltimore Orioles.
