Outfield defense, base running, can steal a few.  Elements that otherwise are lacking on the team.

Yes, yes.  Those nasty other clubs couldn't be bothered to deal us exactly what we wanted.  Well, that is all fine, but taking nothing rather than something is also not without risk.  The idea is we can still get a better deal in the offseason.  But suppose, God forbid, Zach's arm acts up again between now and then or he just isn't the same for whatever reason.  Well, not taking the marginally lesser deal from the Astros or Dodgers would turn out to be the wrong choice versus us having to nontender him.  Hopefully the risk DD has taken plays out in our favor.

Nothing in life is guaranteed. Suppose we traded Zach for a stud starting prospect and that prospect blew out his arm? Given DD's trade record and given the fact that Buck isn't going to stick around for a rebuild, I think the organization made the right decision to not throw in the towel.

I guess we shall see how it turns out.  If we win, everybody is happy.  But this organization, unlike some other organizations, seldom takes the risk of trading veterans for prospects to restock the organization before it gets to where the team is already losing at the major league level.    Not just depth pieces, but actual prospects who might become the next Adam Jones.  And given its antipathy to international drafting, it places a lot of pressure on hitting our drafts.

Or put another way, it seems even if we have a small chance of making a playoff in any one season, we will be buying and not selling even if there is a small chance that one of the prospects that might return to us could become a major contributor in 2018 or beyond.
