Just for the record the Orioles still have their Dominican Academy and have a team in the Dominican Summer League.  Per Steve Melewski in a Blog report the team is as Follows:

Geez that looks like an old roster for the DSL, only two players under 19.  Guys as old as 24.

And there you have it:

  • Status: Traded
  • Full Name: Brallan Andres Perez
  • Age: 21 (January 27, 1996)
  • Birthplace: Cartagena, Colombia
  • Bats/Throws: R/R Ht: 5' 10" Wt: 165

The man is from Cartegena, Colombia, and was acquired with International Bonus Slot money. So, we can all just stop saying that the O's won't acquire International players with International Bonus Slot money.

They will. They will just use an MLB intermediary to do so.

Not sure if serious.

This has crossed my mind too - it's not like it's a totally dumb idea to pick them up from other organizations. I think some downsides, though, include the fact that it's highly unlikely any top international players will be "sold," so we're always dealing in sleepers

If the other teams would rather have money than the player, then, well, obviously.

So Dan doesn't like international signings, but we trade an international pick, for an international player.  Hmmm.

Dan LOVES international signings. The Orioles Franchise does not participate in the Buscone July 2 16-year-old

Per MLBTR, we've acquired Bralian Perez, Yefry Ramirez, Matt Wotherspoon, Jason Wheeler, Damien Magnifico and Milton Ramos for international slots this year, plus using some in the Hellickson deal.

Seems to me that for the most part, these types of deals are going to yield Rule 5-level talent.   Guys who have some shot at making the majors and contributing something, but very little chance of being major league regulars or starting pitchers.    Just my impression.

Didn't we get Katz too?  We are at least using the slot money to buy int'l guys. Perez, Ramirez and Ramos. We're signing int'l talent without spending a dollar. Haha. Plus the other teams are giving them the big bonuses when they are 16.

We just might only find a reliever or a bench guy using this theory.

Much rather have a reliever than another Schoop.

This.

Something you have to give Duquette credit for really, even though any GM worth his salt would be doing the same thing.
