Gee we didn't see that one coming. With the budget invested in this team DD should have made a move for a SP in the offseason.  Not just the guys he got in trades for cash.

Brian Matusz was given 12 starts in 2011, ERA 10.69, and only 49.2 innings in those starts.  Matusz broke Halladay's record for worst ERA with minimum 10 starts.

Yes, and the Orioles were smart enough to cut their losses and send him back to the minors.    But they've just kept throwing Tilly out there.

Honestly, it pains me to say these things.   I'm very fond of Tillman, a key contributor over the prior 5 years and a gutsy performer.    I can't blame Buck for feeling some loyalty and giving Tillman every chance to work out his problems.   But it's been too long now.

If the consensus GM judgement is Chris is not healthy, he will get nothing from any team.   If he is felt to be healthy and that this year was a bad year in a career otherwise marked by well above average major league performance, I wager that some rebuilding teams (like the As for example or White Sox or Tigers) will offer him a two year low cost guaranteed deal in the hopes that he does a big time resurrection with them and then they have an extra year at a truly below market value that they could use to flip him as part of their rebuilding process.     If it is a one year deal that EVERY team wants to offer him, it will drive up the offer until some team says....ahhh, we will take the risk and offer him a two year deal.     But, his track record will not be unnoticed by all those other teams and I don't see how we will just be able to slip in with some low ball one year offer. 

 

We shall come back to this one this winter and see what happens.

I just cant see that happening.  One he says he is health is fine and if that is true...well this has been more than a bad regression.  Second, if he is still physically not right, well how long will he have to be out to prove he is worth money.

He is going to get a one year contract and it is likely to be small and heavily laced with incentives.  He is not getting $20 plus million dollars guaranteed until he proves he can pitch.  

I kinda hope he gets that chance here, but I gotta be honest.  If it was my call, I'd say no unless it was a minor league contract.  Sorry.

Why would Tillman accept a multi year deal that was a cut in pay?  I think you are correct though if that is what he wants.  In fact if he will pitch 2 years for 10M id probably take that chance right now!

      The bullpen has much more depth this year than last year but it just feels like you don’t know who will be the guy each night.  Last year it was get to the 8th and you knew it was Cano and Bautista and lights out.  This year it doesn’t seem to be set roles especially with Kimberly strugggles and out as clasper for now possibly.  I also think Hyde gets a lot of grief about how he handles the bullpen but I think he has been great at looking at the game situation and with who he wants facing what guys.  Cano might come in the 6th one night then close the next, same with Webb or even Coulumbe.  I know a lot of it is analytics but as a group they make a plan and seem to stick with it instead of some managers that have 7 inning guy an 8th inning guy and closer and don’t deviate much.

      On the replay you can see that Julio was lightly jogging after the ball-- either assuming the RF would get it, or assuming Hays wouldn't run. Good on Hays for taking advantage and turning it into a double.

      I think in general people are more negative in life not just in sports and they need to blame someone or something.  In previous years we had a scapegoat in Peter and John.  Elias didn’t go out and make a trade it was because he didn’t have the money to go get anyone or the owner didn’t want to spend.  Now for the most part people seem to think new ownership will give the ok to spend more so now if we don’t do it it is on Elias, Sig, and Hyde for not getting best out of the players.  We dint make a big trade last year and most people just went with well John is cheap we don’t do what they want now it will fall on Elias more then last year in peoples eyes imo.
