Richard Rodriguez to the Pirates

2.55 ERA for Norfolk last year with 10.2 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9. However, he was pretty bad with 4 HR allowed in 5+ IP for the Orioles for a 14.29 ERA. Still, I thought he might have turned into a nugget.

Per MLBTR:

  • The Pirates announced that they’ve signed outfielder Todd Cunningham and right-hander Richard Rodriguez to minor league contracts with invitations to Major League Spring Training. Cunningham, 29 in March, has just a .520 OPS in 130 MLB plate appearances but batted .284/.404/.414 in 358 Triple-A plate appearances between the Cardinals and Dodgers last season. He’s never hit for much power but has long posted quality on-base numbers in Triple-A. Rodriguez, meanwhile, made his big league debut with the Orioles last year but was rocked for nine runs in 5 2/3 innings. But, the 27-year-old comes to the Bucs with a career 2.70 ERA, 8.7 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 243 Triple-A innings between the Orioles and Astros.

Lots of churn at this time of year with AAA/4A type guys.   Time will tell whether we would have been better off with him or some of the other guys we let go like Magnifico, Drake, etc... or with new acquisitions like Gurka, Wojciechowski, Garner, Ferrell, etc.

And the most likely answer is that it doesn't matter much one way or the other.

I wasn’t impressed at all by him, but watch him thrive in Pittsburgh.

His MLB debut could not have been worse, and you are right, I did not see anything remarkable in his stuff.

I hear they've got a pretty good pitching coach.

Someone go make sure wildcard is OK :)

I would have liked to see R Rod get more of a chance in the majors.   But the O's have plenty of  pitching so a guess he is just surplus.  He had options so the issue was keeping him on the 40 man roster or showing him there was a good reason to stay in the O's organization on a minor league contract.

Good info, thanks.

His thread on the Minor League board has been updated, as well.
