Even though they’ve traded Evan Longoria, more moves should be expected for the Rays before Opening Day, writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Rays ownership has directed the front office to reduce payroll, and the team still projects to have a higher Opening Day payroll in 2018 (currently $83.6MM) than it did in 2017 ($70MM). There’s no indication that Tampa Bay has to cut it back to that $70MM level

2 m of 165m is .012%

2m of 130m is .015%

not much of a different, IMO.

You need to drop the % sign or move your decimal 2 spaces to the right.    It’s 1.2% of $165 mm, 1.5% of $130 mm.

Cant image what the Tampa fans are thinking about their team. Wait, do they have fans? :):):)

Yet they finished five games ahead of the Orioles.

BTW, the Orioles went 24-33 (.421) after the Beckam trade and Tampa went 26-29 (.473). Obviously that's not all on Beckam for either team, but it shows why the Rays were willing to trade him within the Division to a team who at the time was one game away from them in the standings.

Beckam first 17 games with Orioles: .479/.500/.845/1.345 in 74 PAs (Orioles went 9-8)
Beckam last 33 games with Orioles: .221/.276/.366/.641 in 156 PAs (Orioles went 13-20)

I dont expect him to be a savior for this team, but, if they can channel him into a more consistent player, that would be beneficial, its clear that he has talent.

As for the Rays, if they keep salary dumping, they are going to be hard press to fill all their spot.

How about this idea, resign Flaherty and have 1 extra catcher and have 14 pitchers?  Each pitcher go 3 innings each and each have 2-3 days rest. That way we won't have pay big for a starting pitcher.  Who cares if the starter don't get credit for wins. What is more important the SP stats or O's wins?  Why can' t they think outside the box?

I did some extensive thinking inside that box a few years ago and the math doesn't work unless you have a bunch of guys on the Norfolk/Bowie shuttle.
