Maybe Duquette still thinks he's a SS and is planning to trade Machado?

Still doesn't make any sense. Why would *anybody* want to pick up a near $23m salary for him? Especially in a terrible team?

Hanley has cleared waivers and Boston has released him. Any team that signs him only pays the major league min.

Ah, didn't realize he cleared waivers. Well, that's slightly more reassuring at least. Thanks.

Alright so I guess you might say the downsides here seem pretty obvious:

34 years old 1B/DH.

.708 OPS

Making nearly $23M this year.....guess he has 2/3 or so left so let’s call it $16M.

But on the positive side.........ummmm...........

A little help?

I guess you could try and trade him and recover something for his non-existent excess value?

He's been released.   So we would only pay him 2/3 of the minimum salary while the Red Sox would be on the hook for the rest.

NOT advocating the move, just pointing out the correct finances.
