Baltimore city deserves the reputation it has. There have even been instances of corrupt cops robbing law-abiding citizens and drug dealers alike. Most of the nasty stuff is in West Baltimore, but it's bad enough to give the whole city a bad reputation. It doesn't help that much of the city is populated with dilapidated, boarded up buildings and row houses with spray paint all over them. More and more people don't trust the police and that reaches far outside Baltimore and this state. I'm not a criminal and have never had more than a speeding ticket and I don't trust the cops either. They are out of control especially in places like Baltimore and Chicago. I read this long, but interesting article from last year about the state of Baltimore city and not much has changed.

If it was just the riots as an isolated incident, I don't think it would be a big problem. For Baltimore city, it just piles on top of everything else. A few places aside, BC is a dump that brings a higher chance of being involved in a crime than almost anywhere else in the country. That's just the facts. Baltimore city has had this reputation for as long as I can remember. It's not a new thing. Being harassed by homeless people for money is unsettling especially when they walk right up to your car as soon as you park. I've seen people smoking crack in broad daylight in Fells Point just walking around like it's nothing. He was offering some to others as well and there was a police SUV about 20 yards away as well. I stopped going down there years ago. Almost everyone I knew from down there had been a victim of a violent crime or robbery at least once and these were just normal people. It's been terrible down there for a long time. The city deserves the bad rep it gets, all of it IMO.

Your sweeping statements about about police are absurd and I'm embarrassed for you. The people who are out of control in Baltimore and Chicago are the drug dealers and gangs, but yeah, say it's all the cops. Do us all a favor and next time you need us, don't call us. Take your chances and feel safe with the good citizens of Baltimore to help you out in times of need.

How is someone who's contract is over fired?

Actually his contract ran through the end of October like most MLB management contracts do.   But he was shown the door on October 3 and is no longer in charge.  So I would say he was fired.

"Sweeping statements about cops"?

He said "There have even been instances of corrupt cops ...".   That's hardly sweeping, and undeniably true

Even if it was end of October and he wanted to stay but they told him to clear out his desk he was fired.

First off, I didn't say "it's all the cops" nor did I make "sweeping statements" about anyone. I provided links to the things I was referring to. You're creating strawmen in an emotional tirade and attacking them. Nice that you would reinforce my feelings about it all by saying "don't call us next time you need us" in the midst of your rage as if you would choose not to help someone based on a difference of opinion or viewpoint with that person. All of that sounds far more embarrassing for you if you really believe that and all over a bunch of things I never even said. Sounds exactly why I don't trust the police as much as I should.

Anyway, since someone eluded to a thread being locked for talking about Baltimore City (which I was not aware of), so I will cease discussion on the topic now. I blame the Mesas for taking their time signing with someone.

In Fells Point? I was just there Go down to Canton for breakfast on a Sunday and eat at  Attwaters or Iron Rooster. 45 to one hour wait at Iron Rooster today .Mostly young folks ,some with young kids and dogs all around  Very family friendly. Go down near the Waterfront Marriott and Four Seasons and see all the building going on around it and all the tourists  Tourism is near it's high again over the last three years. The city is hurt by being the murder capital but 95% of that is gang and drug related in pockets. Those pockets are some of the worst in the country unfortunately. Hurts Baltimore's image greatly.

Why the insistence that he was fired? The Orioles opted to not negotiate a renewal. That’s not a firing. They paid him through the end of his contract and did not renew him. Did they fire Adam Jones? Actually firing Duquette in the last month of his long term contract would have been universally (and rightly) blasted as vindictive and petty. I’ve never been a DD fan, but this bothers me.

    • Let  Westy  play 3B vs right handed pitching and LF vs left-handed pitching.    Urias can play 3B vs lefties.   This is only needed if Cowser can't hit lefties. Mateo and Westy can be platoon in the outfield IMO.
    • O'Neil seems like a perfect fit if he doesn't cost too much in years or dollars.
    • I don’t think we choked. Stubborn as hell. We literally went down with the same sinking ship philosophy that we had the entire 2nd half of the season.  The young guys just have to adjust. I mean getting completely shut down for 5 post season games has to wear on them. If it doesn’t, then we were never built to win.
    • Right now the 2025 OF has three LHH OF in Cowser, Mullins, and Kjerstad. I’m not sure what the bench makeup of this team will be, but it looks like we’ll need 1-2 RHH options.  We could bring Slater back on a small “Tony Kemp” like 1 year deal or a milb deal.  With Santander leaving, and Mateo back to being in the CF mix once healthy, do we go with a more COF RHH type? Trades are a possibility as well, but here is a list of upcoming RHH OF Free Agents,
    • I actually didn't suggest a reliever as the return, that was SG. I was thinking more about trading veterans to acquire pitching prospects, probably lower level lottery tickets. I'd rather pick up ML roster pieces through free agency (assuming of course that Rubenstein will allow a significant payroll boost.).
    • Each player is different. Each player may have a somewhat different hitting philosophy, based on their strengths and weaknesses. Not everyone is a “power hitter.” I would not coach a Tony Santander the same as a Jordan Westburg, or a Jorge Mateo, or a Cedric Mullins. Some should be more selective, while others may need to do more damage and it’s ok for them to K more because the power payoff is worth it. Some should have a more oppo approach, while others may need to try to pull the ball more. The Waltimore certainly has messed with many of our RH bats.  Being a hitting coach is a lot of work, and it is usually not often a position held for many years. They seem to often be a scapegoat when the players do not hit. I wonder what drove the players to swing more at pitches they probably should not have. I seriously doubt it was Ryan Fuller. Hitting coaches have a general philosophical approach, like Fuller would have hitters learn to take pitches they cannot hit well, with less than 2 strikes.. He wanted them to swing only at pitches they can do damage with. They do not dramatically change. For the Orioles to become much more free swinging, that must have driven Fuller to leave. So be it. Going forward, they probably need to be somewhere in between the previous two years. In the playoffs, they get pitched to differently. It’s higher intensity. You have to be proficient in putting the ball in play. You have to be able to take what the game gives you, and execute. There is no excuse for repeatedly having runners in scoring position with less than two outs and repeatedly not being able to get them home. Bases loaded, no outs, hitters 2,3 and 4 coming up…we have to score there. The approach was to hit a grand slam. Awful baseball. A ton of talent on this roster, and something has to change.
    • I have been pretty happy with Kjerstad's defense in the outfield corners.   Not that I want him in left at home.     I agree with what Elias said about Mayo's body type being more suited for 1B.
