Hyde: New O’s Manager

If it helps, Roch was very clear in his morning blog today that Hyde is going to be the new manager.   So I think he's done his job very well in this situation.  Obviously he has to report what the GM is saying.   He could then side with the team and say that the national media is "fake news!" or whatever, or he could confirm their reports.   He seems to be confirming that the media is right and Elias is fibbing......at best.

Can't say I'm thrilled about that but it's not like Buck or Dan were bastions of truth and openness during their time here.

Crabcakes, football, and operating in shrouds of secrecy, that's what Maryland DOES!

I think by now we are all on board with the fact that this is the choice, that the information was leaked by the Chicago side since they now have a hire to make.

I wish him luck and Mike Elias better fortune with his dissemination of information going forward.

The reporters assigned to the Orioles were with Elias and the Orioles crew. The leak came from the Cubs side. The national media guys are talking to and have contacts in many clubs, obviously including the cubs. Not a failure of local reporting. They have new and apparently tight lipped people to get to know.

There are likely to be further changes to Maddon’s staff, if only because bench coach Brandon Hyde is likely to be hired by one of the teams still looking for a manager. He’s said to be a finalist for the Twins job (subscription), with the Blue Jays and Rangers in the mix as well.

...

Hyde departing would leave the Cubs looking for a new bench coach, which could just mean shuffling around some internal positions. It could also mean going after Mark DeRosa, to whom they offered the position last season, or David Ross, who fans would love to see back. DeRosa has been a very popular name among potential managerial candidates, but he seems to be biding his time for the right spot.

...

While the only hot seat Maddon is concerned with is in his Winnebago now that temps are dropping, there’s a sense that his tenure in Chicago could come to a close when he contract expires at the end of next season. And as much as agent Alan Nero intends to fiddle with extension talks, the uncertainty of Maddon’s future is chum in the water for would-be sharks.

I don't see what the big deal is about Elias being a little tight-lipped or even having to fib a bit when faced with stuff like this. The guy wants to announce things on his own terms and communicate properly to the candidates who were NOT chosen. We should be glad someone is looking to handle these affairs with a little more care and respect. Dan, for all his good qualities, was a poor communicator who at times both seemed to rub other execs the wrong way and, indeed, has been reprimanded by the league a couple of times for some of his tactics.

Elias is a no-nonsense guy with a plan. But he also says some interesting things to the media that have been a pleasure to read because they hold substance, unlike some of Dan's throwaway lines. Roch's latest blog this morning has him struggling for a sense of "normalcy" in these meetings and trying to figure out Elias. I'm not sure anything has been all that abnormal and it strikes me as a bit whiny. Is anyone really dying for carbon-copy quotes from the Orioles manager at the Winter Meetings? Elias is a smart guy who knows that the Winter Meetings are an arbitrary set of dates. He's said as much. The media want to make it a bigger deal than it is. It's largely a collection of casual executive meetings and in no way should that impact how quickly or how thoroughly Mike Elias, et al operate.

As soon as Mr. Hyde made the call to Chicago, they were leaking to get it out so that they could make a hire quickly and move on. Joe is a lame duck and this new hire may well be someone they look closely at. If it isn't Girardi. Maddon's' show grew old with Theo.

I think Roch just dislikes the winter meetings in general.

Well, there is that. :)

For the record, I don't think Roch should have done anything else than how he handled the Hyde rumor. I just think that clearly it's not Elias' fault this leaked and he's trying to do this properly. Perhaps he's being a bit too buttoned up right now, and that may change as he settles in, but I find no fault here.

Are you talking about the Korean kid?

Just a few years ago Dan was the top choice for any team looking for executive management. Whether he was good in Baltimore or not. And his analytics staff, though not fine enough for Buck, was thought perfect to replace the Astro's outgoing analytic leadership.

Oh I don't disagree. I'm a Dan fan. There was that incident and another I believe, though I can't recall off the top of my head. He sometimes bumbled these things in his dealings with the press or other parties. Hence Brady, I'm inclined to believe.

... the Orioles won’t leave Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino with a new manager, a press conference or “introduction” coming to Baltimore at a later date. If that’s the case, they’re going to maintain their streak of not getting to the podium.

This is why I don’t bother to dress up
