Núñez vs. Ruiz

I would not be shocked to see a defensive minded bench with a lot of flexibility out of the gate.

1.  Backup C

2.  Martin/Escobar SS

3. Drew Jackson Super Util

4. Ruiz 3B/COF

Will Trumbo be ready for OD?  Will the need for EY Jr force Ruiz to AAA?  Could Wilkerson beat out Ruiz for a spot?  Don’t sleep on Jace Peterson for a bench spot. He can play multiple positions decent, and can he has some speed.

I think out of the gate we try not to be embarrassing defensively. So we may sacrifice some offensive potential for defensive coverage.

I think they will value defense as well.

That said I can’t see them having Jackson as basically their 4th OF and keeping all those infield players. I don’t see Ruiz and Escobar on the team at the same time unless a Rule 5 player doesn’t stay. Only way I see that is like I said if Trumbo is on DL.

I thought coming into the spring Nunez was the favorite and may still be since I don't think he has options left and Ruiz does. Saying that, Ruiz could make it interesting. It will be interesting to see if they give him some RF time this spring if he keeps on hitting.

From what I have read Ruiz is a better fielder at 3B than Nunez.  So it would be Nunez that would move to RF but I don't think he is very fast. He may not have the range to play RF.

He has better foot speed than Tim Beckham, Adam Jones, and Trey Mancini according to Statcast.

I like a Ruiz/Nunez platoon.  We can start the season with 14 position players.

Working my way through the new BP book, and Ruiz did get a very nice batch of PECOTA comparables: Max Muncy, Colin Moran and Brian Anderson.  The 3-for-3 was the part that stood out the most - I usually expect to see 1 bad, 1 good, 1 random.  He was sort of 1A and 1B with Foltynewicz in the Gattis trade four years ago.

How has Ruiz looked on the defensive side?

Solid from what I heard so far.

Escobar played some 3rd last year, another reason I think he makes the team.

If he keeps this up they may try to get Núñez through waivers and keep him at AAA.

I'd still like to see Mancini get some reps at 3b. He likely would field better than Nunez and hit better than Ruiz.

What I'd like to see is Mancini at 1st. Trumbo Davis as the DH's. I know it won't happen.
