LYNCHBURG SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER

REYES DRIVES IN FOUR IN GAME TWO

FREDERICK, MD – The Lynchburg Hillcats (41-40/9-5) swept a doubleheader against the Frederick Keys (34-49/5-9) on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field, claiming game one 8-0, before earning a 6-4 come-from-behind win in game two. With the pair of setbacks, the Keys were swept in the three-game series and finished the homestand 2-5. Jomar Reyes led the offense in the second game, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. The four RBIs equaled his largest output in a Keys uniform.

In game two, the Keys enjoyed a 4-2 lead after five innings. A two-run homer by Reyes put the Keys ahead in the fourth, while he added an RBI base knock that scored Zach Jarrett one inning later. From there, Lynchburg plated the final four runs. Back-to-back singles with one out put the tying run on base against Kieran Lovegrove. A wild pitch moved Gavin Collins to third, before a Mike Rivera groundout made it a one-run contest.

Lynchburg then plated three more runs in the seventh. Lovegrove (0-1) issued two walks and hit a batter to load the bases and force a pitching change. Entering with nobody out and the Carolina League’s top hitter at bat, Tim Naughton threw a wild pitch to score the tying run, before an Oscar Gonzalez two-run single made it a two-run Hillcats lead. The Keys put the tying run on base in the seventh but could not score against Yapson Gomez.

Riley Echols (3-0) pitched a scoreless sixth to earn the win, while Lovegrove allowed four runs in one inning on two hits in the loss. Gomez picked up the save, working a clean seventh.

The Hillcats produced three multi-run innings in game one. Sending eight to bat in the first inning, Oscar Gonzalez singled off the body of Brenan Hanifee to make it 1-0, while an infield single later in the inning by Jodd Carter put the visitors up a pair.

Hector Hernandez (1-1) held the Keys off balance following that. Making his second start with Lynchburg, the 28-year-old earned the win delivering 5.2 scoreless innings of three-hit baseball to go with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Still a 2-0 score after five innings, Hanifee (5-8) retired the first two batters of the sixth, but would not record another out. A walk and a single put two aboard for Nolan Jones who hit a three-run homer to right. Gonzalez followed with a solo blast.

The Hillcats hit back-to-back homers in the seventh as well, getting solo shots from Collins and Carter. Hanifee suffered the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings.

A six-game roadtrip kicks off on July 4 in Carolina. Right-hander David Lebron (2-3, 3.88) starts for the Keys against Mudcats right-hander Christian Taugner (3-5, 5.84). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn app.

The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. Following the 2018 season, the Keys were named the winner of the Carolina League’s Complete Franchise Award. This goes to a team in the league which demonstrates franchise stability and significant contributions to its community and the league. In 2019, the team will host the Carolina League All-Star Classic presented by Visit Frederick. Hartford, CT – Jack Wynkoop tossed a complete game four-hit shutout as the Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Bowie Baysox 4-0 in the series finale Wednesday evening.

For the first time in the series, the Yard Goats scored the first run of a game. Vance Vizcaino led off the third inning with a triple off Michael Baumann, who was making the first Double-A start of his career. Baumann struck out the next two batters, but with two outs Arvicent Perez snuck a single into right field, scoring Vizcaino and giving Hartford a 1-0 lead.

That run in the third was the only run Hartford would score against Baumann in what was a very impressive start. The 23-year-old tossed 6.0 innings and struck out five batters on the night, lowering his ERA to 0.75 in 12.0 innings with Bowie this season.

The Yard Goats added a second run in the seventh off reliever Francisco Jimenez. Tyler Nevin led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Mylz Jones doubled down the left field line, making it 2-0 Hartford.

In the eighth, Hartford added another run when Manuel Melendez scored on a throwing error. Colton Welker then came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Bowie’s best chance to score came in the fifth inning, when Rylan Bannon singled and Jesmuel Valentin doubled to lead off the inning. After a pop out and a strikeout, Chris Clare was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Wynkoop induced a fly out to end the inning.

The Baysox return home on Thursday night to begin a four-game series against the Harrisburg Senators heading into the All-Star break. Thursday night’s July 4th contest features an Independence Day celebration including a fireworks display after the game. Bruce Zimmermann will start for Bowie opposing Harrisburg hurler Tyler Mapes. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
    • How much different? They sat Judge yesterday, they threw their playoff starters for 5+ innings yesterday and today. They are also playing for the best record in the AL. They aren't mailing it in.
    • It’s not just the O’s. I’ve checked the Dodgers who have similar prices and they have a lot of upper deck NLDS games 2 & 3 available. Same for the NLCS. yanks still have seats available also. — In general, I’m sure alot of fans are just gonna wait till the day of to grab tickets.
    • That makes no sense. If they had to win their current series would have looked much different.
    • I agree. You have to wonder if the Yankees are behind him getting hit. Perhaps the ghost of George has struck
