A common joke is that's why Koreans are of more volatile temperament than Japanese, who, in general, avoid very spicy food. (There's wasabi but only for sushi and cold buckwheat noodles [zaru soba].) There's been a Korean food craze in Japan the last few years, but they cut way back on the garlic and chili peppers and add a lot of sugar.
