To give a little more color on Law's first mock, he has Pittsburgh taking Davis 1-1 (the ACC Tournament started on Tuesday and Davis went 2-5 with 2 HR's in a win against Clemson, and 3-7 with a HR in yesterday's loss to Georgia Tech). Here's what he wrote on Leiter being selected by Arizona, one pick after us:

6. Arizona Diamondbacks: Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt

They’d love Lawlar, and I would say there’s a non-zero chance he gets here; if Texas takes Rocker or Leiter and Boston takes the other, that probably pushes Lawlar here, with Baltimore likely going under slot.

I'd be furious if we passed over either of the Vandy pitchers or Lawlar to go underslot.

Lots of talk..who knows but Law was the only one who had us taking Kjerstad last year.

Do you have a link for that? I certainly don't remember that, and I follow Law on Twitter and read his stuff and he is the type of person that wouldn't allow that to be forgotten.

Just pick whichever player has a serious illness that will prevent them from getting on the field in 2021 and maybe 2022.

When Frobby's posts start to drip with sarcasm you know things aren't going well.

Rocker took the loss yesterday against Arkansas, his 3rd of the season and 9th of his college career. Only lasted 3 and a third, 4 runs on four hits, four walks, and six strikeouts.

He might drop out of the 1st round if he keeps this up.

And Mississippi beat Leiter Friday to I believe put Vandy out of SEC tournament.   Perhaps load management bonus for NCAA's.

Baseball cube this morning had IP at Rocker 88, Leiter 76.     Waaay back in the day, the '89 LSU Tigers put 152 IP on Ben McDonald.

5. Baltimore Orioles: Harry Ford, C, North Cobb (GA) High School

The current wisdom is that Baltimore will look to cut a deal here that saves them a substantial amount of money, probably a million or more, after they signed their first pick in 2019, Heston Kjerstad, for $2.5 million below slot. They’ve been linked to Brady House, but he has no reason to take that kind of haircut here, since he’s in every mix from here on down.

From Keith Law. Has us skipping Watson, House, Leiter and Jobe to pick Ford.

Ugh.  I really hope Law is just trolling O's fans here.  Picking a catcher this high would be a bad enough decision this year given all of the other needs in the organization.  Picking an overslot catcher would be adding insult to injury.

I'll put Ford at the top of my list of picks I don't want to see the O's make, followed by Frelick, Cowser and Davis.

Rocker and Leiter scare me - between the up and down seasons, and the extra inning. I honestly prefer Jobe. If a player is there who is worth the money, then I hope the Orioles draft them. But if the Orioles have several guys rated roughly equally, then you might as well take the cheapest option, and save money for overslots later on in the draft. I'd be annoyed if the Orioles didn't spend their entire bonus pool, but if they choose to spread it out more...that does't bug me. Now if they passed on Lawlar or Mayar, I'd be more annoyed.

This seems like a year where I’ll be better off knowing almost nothing before tuning in the evening of the draft and seeing who we pick.

This may be a good philosophy for all Elias-led drafts.

ESPN McDaniel just had a Memorial Day Baseball Tonight interview ~6 weeks out.

1-1 Pirates - said they want upside, don't mind long wait, probably that translates to Lawlar or Mayer.   He flat out said the two prep SS are the two best players in the draft (maybe a sop to Pirates fans about to get a rare national telecast).   If either cuts a deal, they'll be the pick.

1-2 Rangers - want fast moving pitching for where they think they are in their rebuild, probably on Leiter

College bats - characterized as poor group headed by Davis alone.   He put on an Evan Gattis comp on the bat, in the respect it is a lot of brute strength and not your classic baseball fluidity.   Said based on that he could be early 24-25 peak kind of guy.

Rocker kind of floating 4th, maybe 7th with that pick his floor, implying Baltimore not on him.   Obviously all the college guys have NCAA's starting to make the scouts ooh and aah over the next month, but regular season + conference tournaments now done.

    • Oh, I thought you were taking about his hitting in high leverage situations.
    • Frustrating sure, but boring is not what I would I say. We do steal bases at times. I would like for us to play more small ball sometimes and it is frustrating to see us be so homerun happy. I think with Westy back, we will see a resurgence of timely hitting as that is very contagious.   We saw that at the beginning of the year. Amazing sight to see for sure. I think the most disheartening thing that really shocked me is the apathy and outright disgust I’ve seen from O’s fans toward their team. Perhaps we have been spoiled? No idea. Maybe expectations were too high? No idea, but frankly, a lot of yall focusing on other things and simply not watching/posting would make next season a lot more enjoyable. This is the first time since 96-97 where we make the playoffs in back to back years and you guys have been acting like some real lame jerks this whole dang season. Frankly, yall should be ashamed of yourselves. We are an incredibly young team and with that come highs and lows, but yall don’t see that. You just love to complain and moan and bloviate. Where’s the heart? Where’s the loyalty? Where’s the gratitude? You’d think with all this team has overcome, especially being so young, y’all would be happy, but no. So go off on your little bike rides or whatever. Go watch a movie if this saga seems boring to you. I don’t care. Just for once this season, keep your immense negativity to yourself.
    • Really an amazing run, 4 straight years. I completely agree with the ranking, too. There's no way Kjerstad is still a prospect though, right? 45 days is the cutoff and he's played in 48 games.
    • i think we all are going to have ptsd from that 9th inning for a while,it was that brutally bad . they need to do some special to get us to forget about it
    • wow,did gunnar and adley have to do this last season?
    • I suggested that earlier but I think it's probably a bad play with no out. The O's have like 85% probability of scoring. There is a huge downside risk of Mullins popping up the bunt for a double play. He could also whiff on the bunt making at least Holliday an easy out. With one out and only 65% probability of scoring it's a much better play. I think if Santander and Mullins were reversed in the lineup Hyde may have done it but not when you have two shots to get the run in.
