To properly challenge the player?  Isn't this supposed to be about player development?

It seems as though you're assuming that your idea of properly challenging the player is correct and that Elias' decision was not.

I think what you want to say is that "I would do things this way so I'm going to assume Elias would do the same thing."

It's not what I would do, it's what literally all organizations do.

If your competitive? You bring up guys that can help. If your not? You don't rush young guys because there's literally no net gain.

Like..what?

Huh?

Do you think the way they showcased him around helped his development last year?  Do you think that was what was best for the player?

I don't think Elias brought the player around to "showcase" him if he thought it would hurt him or his development...no. Thats not how a guy who is trying to rebuild a team after just taking over recently works. But you go ahead and believe that.

As for as AR is concerned sure.

I don't think his placement last year was designed to aid his development.

Just like I don't think sending Mountcastle home last year instead of calling him up in September was what was best for his development.

Do you disagree with me on those two cases?

Because of the situation? Answer my question then...

We're competitive 3 years from now, have a 19-20 year old that's crushing it at all levels. We're just going to let him rot down in the minors if he's showing he's ready?

Optics man, if you seriously think how he's running a team during the beginning/during a complete rebuild when W/L don't matter will be the same when the team is going for a pennant...

Like idk what to say.

There is a different way of looking at things.  Tampa Bay is considered a contender right now and has what some consider the best farm system in baseball.  That's is not a bad place to be. If that is my goal, then yes I probably try to keep control of him during his most productive years.

I think that it's reasonable to assume that the decisions that Elias has made so far is based on the current conditions of both the Major League team and the Minor League system.  As those conditions change (hopefully) in the future, it's also reasonable to assume that his decisions may be different.

Can of Corn on OH definitely knows how to property develop a player over the GM of a professional baseball organization who has been in the game for decades and been apart of some of the most successful "team builds" over the past couple decades.

Don't challenge that.

So the Padres did in fact game Tatis' service time last year and I just missed it?  I would have though I would have noticed that.  You know the same Padres that lost 96 games the year before.

TB is bringing guys up if they're ready and in a pennant race.

Just because they have a great farm doesn't mean they rush guys just to do so. I said if a guy has shown he's clearly ready.

It's not that I disagree, it's that I admit that Elias has information that we don't have, including information from his player development staff and scouts.  Along with his own experience in both areas.

For the record, I have no strong opinion on AR's assignments last year and agree with you on Mountcastle.  In fact, I think Mountcastle should be in Baltimore now.  I also think Sisco should be playing every time a right-hander pitches.  But, I do think Elias has reasons for the decisions that he makes and he never shares them with me which pisses me off. ?

He did have mono, that could have changed their plans. I agree Elias has been very conservative.

I wish Kjerstad would have been put on the 60 man, wouldn't have hurt anything to have him working with the development guys every day.

I would not bet against Kjerstad being in Bowie later that season.

Just to steer the conversation back to Alberto, I am definitely more comfortable penciling him as the 2021-22 second baseman than I was last September. He has been locked in since Spring Training and looks more confident against righties.

He really seems to be a leader with his energy and passion for the game. Always see him cheering on his teammates in the dugout. He looks like the heart of the team right now.

He literally just got drafted. It's hardly crazy to start a guy there right out of the draft regardless of where he's at development wise out of the gate and go from there.

AR never should have seen Aberdeen or the GCL.  That was horrible.

He should have started at Delmarva or Frederick.

And this has nothing to do with rushing him.  If he is as good as people say, he would be a MLer within 2 years..an advanced college bat, especially one at a position that he excels at, should move very fast.  There is no reason to keep the player in the minors.

If this was a normal season and he was producing as they thought, he would be in AA right now.  He would likely enter ST as the favorite to be the starting catcher in Baltimore, after they stole a few weeks for service time.

Now, he likely won’t be up in Baltimore until at least mid season next year and perhaps later than that.

First, horrible?  Just a little over the top.

And, I don't think that there was any chance at all that Rutschman was going to be in Baltimore at all this year, much less soon after service time was resolved.  And, I doubt any other team would have moved him that quickly.  At best, he was likely to be here some time later in the 2021 season.

    • Opportunity Cost and the importance of dry powder...  Also makes me wonder how Cease was valued...
    • I feel like plays like these have been a part of his entire tenure here. He has the speed but not the mental game. I expect him to be gone once Hays is ready.
    • The Orioles have gone 103 consecutive RS series without being swept, spanning 322 games including series of: 2 G: 8 times 3 G: 75 4 G: 19 5 G: 1 If the games were decided by coin flip, the odds of this occurring randomly would be approximately 1 in 785,670. In addition, the Orioles have now staved off a sweep in a regular-season series finale 13 times: 5/19/22 NYY 9-6 6/22/22 Was 7-0 7/3/22 Min 3-1 9/18/22 Tor 5-4 9/21/22 Det 8-1 5/28/23 Tex 3-2 6/8/23 Mil 6-3 6/18/23 ChC 6-3 7/2/23 Min 2-1 7/19/23 LAD 8-5 8/10/23 Hou 5-4 4/14/24 Mil 6-4 5/8/24 Was 7-6 It's amazing that they've gone 13-0 in such games, but it might be even more impressive (qualitatively, because the assumptions of defining a non-coin-flip model are truly daunting) that they've only gone to a win-or-be-swept finale 13 times when expectation by coin flip would be 25.1875.
    • The money is sunk at this point, but I don't think any polar answer is optimal here.  Bullpen by committee until someone emerges.  It's a little more difficult with the 3-batter rule, but that's how they need to roll and I credit Hyde for being ready with the quick hook for the last 10 days or so.
    • Great sequence in the 10th where Mateo singled, driving in Westburg, stole 2nd and went to 3rd on the overthrow.  Then Mateo scored on a wild pitch.  I've joined the Mateo fan club, at least as a utility player.  Having Mateo on base has to drive pitchers crazy.
    • As someone that was all for DFA’ing McKenna for Hicks last week, I really can’t fault him for tonight.   I’m impressed he stole the base. He sort of had to run there with two outs. He stole it. He just came off the bag. That happens.  The route may have not been the best because he was going to his left and as a RH thrower he was just trying to position himself to throw home. He doesn’t have Vlad Sr’s arm out there. That’s a .01% chance play there.  Our CF depth is pretty thin. I think the only way we DFA McKenna is if Hicks comes here. Kjerstad will be the one to go for Hays. Remember last August when at full strength/healthy Mullins, and only a 26 man roster, we rolled with a 4 man bench of McCann, Hicks, Mateo, Urias/Frazier/Westburg.  Oddly, we’re deep enough into the season, and CF depth is thin, that I’d say there’s a 50/50 shot McKenna doesn’t clear waivers. I don’t know we have the luxury of CF depth to DFA him w/o Hicks in the mix.
    • I think they will DFA him. They already did it once. And the fact nobody claimed him means you’re probably right about not starting for other teams.
