Acuna is mentioned as a possible comp.

I always figured an extension was the plan for SD given that they didn't game his service clock.

They’d have better leverage if they had gamed his service clock.  ?

One huge difference between Tatis and Acuna is that the former is the son of a major league player who made almost $18 mm during his career.    Hence, he’s less likely to give a big discount in order to secure his family’s financial security; they’re pretty secure already.    That wasn’t the case with Acuna.

We don't know, maybe he would have resented it and been less likely to deal?  ?

I agree that Tatis is going to cost more than Acuna, he's just the most similar recent player.

The Braves, of course, did game Acuna’s service clock.    He entered this season 13 days shy of two years of service.   If he resented it, he didn’t resent it enough to not give the Braves a very good deal on his contract.

I see that Tatis is using the same agency Manny uses.    My guess is they will drive a much harder bargain than Acuna’s agent did, but I doubt they’ll try to play Boras-like games.    8/$150 mm?

I'm not good at this game.

I do think Acuna signed a deal that was considered team friendly before the ink was dry.

Acuna’s salary maxes out at $17 mm and includes two team options at that price, so it’s 8/$100 mm without the options (includes a $10 mm buyout if Option 1 isn’t exercised), or 10/$124 mm if the two options are exercised and the buyout isn’t paid.   The first two years of the deal are pre-Arb, the next four are Arb (super-2), the final two are FA, plus the two option years.   That’s extremely team friendly IMO.    He also signed it when he had 0.159 years of service under his belt, whereas Tatis has 2.000.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure ???

Pound-wise, and penny-foolish ???

If you don't mess with my time-clock in the first place, I may not put the screws to you later ........ it's plausible.

This notion/theory/supposition reminds me somewhat of what the Indians did in the early-to-mid 90's, which helped them to win 2 American League Pennants for the first time since 1954, 5 consecutive post-season appearances, 6 post-season appearances in 8 years, and 8 consecutive winning seasonsThey locked up numerous of their potential young stars before they were eligible for arbitration by giving them much more than the minimum salary. So they spent a lot more money than they had to in the short run, and simultaneously made a financial commitment to these players in the long runThey took a risk, and it worked out well for them.

So the Padres offered 12/400.  Tatis' agent counters at, what...  15/600?

I don’t believe this source.  The first four years of the twelve, he’s under team control.   Offering that kind of money would be insane.

Dude always gets hurt.

I like Tatis Jr. but for the past two years there's been a giant hype train about how he's the "next face of baseball," whatever that means.

Um, no.  Trout is still playing at a very high level.  And Tatis can't stay on the field.  Went down last night with a shoulder separation after a swing and a miss.

I know Trout doesn’t really steal bases anymore and his defense has dropped some but it’s insane that people want to replace him as the best player.  It’s not close.

Tatis is a great talent, but couldn’t agree with you more.

I get the feeling that Trout could probably steal bases if he wanted to, he just doesn't want to ding himself up.

I also get the feeling that MLB and certain publications want the "next face of baseball" to be someone who appeals to a more urban segment of the population.  Tatis, with the dreads, the flash and the fact that he's a minority covers those bases.  I hate to say it, but I believe there's an agenda to be had.  Trout, for all his greatness, is boring.  He doesn't want endorsements, he doesn't draw attention to himself.  Even Manfred a few years ago was frustrated that Trout didn't do anything to promote himself and the game.

    • I can see them pursuing him and I wouldn’t be against it. But anyone who thinks he’s signing for 4/120, or that there’s a big FA SP class, needs a better editor.
    • Roch is an idiot. Criticizing the fanbase at a time like now is ridiculous. 1 run in 2 games? Cmon man.    Also, nobody asks for that stupid emcee to get the crowd excited, that’s strictly for tv purposes.
    • I was there and there was nothing to get remotely excited about except for 5 minutes in the 5th inning. Stupid swings at the plate, lack of hitting in RISP. Cleveland scored more run before they recorded an out today than we did in 2 full games at home. Let that sink in. Our team is full of chokers that don’t handle pressure well or rise to the occasion.
    • This really only works if you're looking at 2 years of data.  Look at 4 years of data and suddenly Burnes looks like a vastly better bet.  Burnes has had an era under 3 for 3 out of the last 4 seasons plus the covid year.  Musgrove only 1 prior to signing the deal.
    • Did anyone here know she could play guitar?
    • I survived the decade plus losing years, I’m fairly hard to disappoint at this age. That said, I think they can change some things up in spring training - small ball stuff isn’t hard to add to the arsenal. I think they O’s may add a FA or two or resign one or two of our own guys in the winter. I don’t think we will ever throw money around like the Yanks or Dodgers, but I do believe ownership will invest more than the previous crew. All I was saying is I hope Elias starts to tackle some of the changes he talked about to push the rebuild to the next level. I do agree I’ll not be able to evaluate any potential changes until this time next year.

Maybe the fans just matched the team’s energy level the last 3 months? They were lifeless and witnessed what happened in the WC all too often from July-September. They went 1-13 with RISP, had 2 real XBH’s, and 1 run in 18 innings. The Guardians scored 2 runs 4 batters into their series. The team gave the fans little to cheer for from July on - the attendance and energy level just reflected that and the general discontent that this year’s team brought, even though there’s no shame in a 91 win season.
