The Hebrew Hammer

He is 23 and hitting .341/.394/.670 through 45 games coming into today. And his nickname is awesome on many levels.*

He's obviously running hot (BABIP = 0.382 with a 21.4% LD%, HR/FB = 23/7%) but its now over 200 plate appearances. He'll be a player.

Anyway, besides wanting to type "The Hebrew Hammer" as a title, I was wondering about this since I seem to recall a fairly large deal being made about Shawn Green being a Jewish baseball player, and Braun should have a much more productive career. I assume there aren't many other Jewish players today. Is this (or will this be when Braun keeps raking and gets deserved attention) a big deal? It shouldn't matter (or should it)?

*Braun's nickname is "The Hebrew Hammer", referencing his Jewish heritage, former Brewer Hank Aaron, and the movie The Hebrew Hammer, starring Adam Goldberg. His dad is Israeli (and Jewish), but his mom is Christian. He was raised Jewish.

I don't think it matters that he is jewish at all. Until you said it I didnt even know. I think since there is no persecution/ discrimination here then it will never be that big of a deal.

FWIW, most other current Jewish Players

David Newhan

Kevin Youkilis

John Grabow

Scott Showenweis

Brad Ausmus

Jason Hirsh

Mike Lieberthal

Jason Marquis

Adam Stern

The famous ones are Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax

If he can play even average defense at third, he may end up being the best third baseman in the NL in a few years.

He's not too too bad with glove, and he has a good arm, he just doesn't throw it towards Prince as often as he should (6 throwing errors so far).

Well, his defense is what held him back from being called up.

But that come.

Defense is normally something that can be ok if you work at it and care.

That is the way it is in basketball as well.

Cabrerra, Wright, Zimmmerman. There are a lot of young, talented third baseman in the NL right now. I don't know too much about his defense, but at 6'2, I wonder if he'll eventually shift over to 1B. The thing is, they have Fielder. Good problem to have for Milwaukee. They're building a nice team there with a lot of good, young parts.

The American Jewish Historical Society sells a set of baseball cards (made by or for them) of every Jewish player who even appeared in the major leagues from the beginning of MLB until a year or two ago. A lot of players with 5 or 10 AB, and just a handful of really good players. The list of current players is actually pretty impressive. However, it doesn't really work to call Youkilis the Jewish God of Walks.

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
