Just curious, what's the rationale of sending down Pat before bringing back DJ? I understand waiting to activate DJ till just before game time to make sure he's healthy but why not just wait to send down Valaika till that point?

Money. Players get a per diem when on the roster.

If Valaika and Urias are Titanic deck chairs (let's be real here, if this is the Titanic, it sunk long ago) then I guess Jahmai Jones and Rylan Bannon are the band playing as the ship goes down.  Doesn't mean I don't think they should get a shot, they absolutely should...but I don't see how they're significantly better than Valaika and Urias.

It's not "control," but an employer has the right to distance themselves from an employee if they feel that employee is not representing the company in the best light.  Employers have rights too, let's not forget.  But let's not let that get in the way of "mah freedumbs!!!"

I would think the 10 day rule more then money.  It gives you an extra day on that if needed.  The amount of money basically nothing.

One less day of major league service time.  And he can be recalled one day sooner if necessary.

It’s about $3,000.   Valaika is on a split contact that pays him $875 k in the majors, $300 k in the minors.  The difference amounts to about $3,000 a day during the season.  

I agree it’s mostly about having the flexibility to bring him back one day sooner if needed.

Urias as an option left.   They know what they have in Valaika but they are still trying to figure what Urias can give them.

Plus Valaika may have been able to get 10 plate appearances against Zac Lowther or whoever the Bowie SP was yesterday on the Orioles off day.   Good practice for both.

I think they feel more comfortable with Urias as backup SS, drfense-wise.
