Adley Rutschman 2021

I wanted to give Adley a little more time after my initial looks early in the year when he was struggling to get to the inside fastball.

Right now, he's locked in lining balls all over the field. Even his outs have been pretty loud of late. Watching Rutschman show his oppo power, he certainly has better than 50 game power so I'd rate his power about 60. He has a great eye at the plate and frequently gets behind in counts still because he takes close pitches that may or may not be strikes, but he's very good at looking for a pitch to drive. He'll roll over on pitches occasionally, and he's still got some miss, but in the modern game, it's not a concern.

Defensively, he frames pitches well, blocks well, is never lazy behind the plate, and he's got good velocity on his throws. i will say though that his accuracy has not be very good at times and is why his caught stealings are low this year.

It's pretty clear he's made the adjustments from his early struggles and is looking like the guy the Orioles though they drafted. I see no reason why he won't be an impact guy at the major league level and that will most likely stat next year, since I would be surprised if the Orioles start his clock this year (no need to get into that whole thing, just saying I don't see them bring him up the year because of clock issues).

He is swinging and missing at a very low rate this year.

Clearly catching up with fastball isn’t an issue if that’s the case.

As you said, he has made the right adjustments and he made them very fast.  Probably also some mental/putting pressure on himself stuff was going was going on early as well.

I think a lot of his issue early with strikeouts was him learning the strike zone at that level.

I believe I read he was taking a lot of pitches early in the count and falling behind as a result.

So happy that this appears to be the case.  I definitely was nervous that he had too much swing and miss in his swing.

The year off in 2020 and AR's lack of experience in the minors (probably) resulted in the cautious approach out of the gate. If AR played in the minor leagues last year he probably would have been aggressive from the start.

Rutschman had a pretty terrible game yesterday.   In his second at bat, he came up with the bases loaded and one out and grounded into a double play on the first pitch.    Next time up, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, he struck out.   Later, he made a throwing error on a stolen base attempt that allowed the runner to advance to 3rd.  That led to the winning run for Akron.

The throwing error was a minor league error, neither the 2B or SS covered on the steal. Runner had a huge jump but AR threw a seed on the money for a slap tag, would’ve nailed the runner.
