Praise for Severino

I’ve touched on this already, but you have to specify whether you want a better bat, a better glove, which would be easy, or a better all-around player, which should also be easy. We need to prioritize defense from our catching, and even if Severino is better than Wynns, It’s like debating the best seat to watch the bombs fall.

We need a defender. And damn the bat. A great framer, A great throwing arm, and at least a reputation that says, “don’t run on this guy”

It’s been a while, but Jason Castro got $24 million because he’s a good framer, and he’s still bouncing around somewhere at the age of 35-ish.

I do have to say that your first couple of sentences made me laugh out loud.I do have to say that your first couple of sentences made me laugh out loud.

If the plan is for the backup catcher to catch one third of the games I do not want a defensive only catcher.  In order to move up in the standings I don't think a no hit catcher helps in the AL East.

Yes, because Severino's .673 career OPS and career OPS+ of 79 is going to be the difference.

Let's see you wiggle your way out of that one.

Yes you can because I'd never say anything as absurd as Severino being a good backup catcher.

You don't have to look far.  Yan Gomes.  Kurt Suzuki, maybe.

You're also only assuming that the only way the Orioles can acquire a backup catcher is via free agency.  That's absurd, too.

Waiver wire baby.

Let's take a look at how much the Astro's and Ray's spend on catchers before deciding how much to spend on a backup.

Mike Zunino signed for $2M as the frontline guy this winter.

When I look at who the available backup catchers may be it makes me think that  Severino may be the best choice.

Perhaps.  But I still doubt we go to arbitration with him.  Non tender him and offer him $1 million perhaps.  I'd be shocked if we spend more than that on a backup C.

Gomes is coming off a 2/10m contract.  People here don't even think the O's will pay 3M for a backup catcher.  I don't consider Gomes someone that Elias would likely sign.

Suzuki will be 38 soon.  He is not hitting for the Dodgers at this point.  The Dodgers don't need him to hit but I think the O's do need a back that can hit some.   His throwing is below average.  Severino's arm is better.  Too old for me to spend money on.  If you like him go for it.

As a backup catcher Hyde can play him vs pitchers he has a history of hitting and lefties pitchers who his career OPS is 750 against.

Agree with this. And the signing probably doesn't happen until late Jan.

Interesting.

So he can only play him against pitchers that he's got a history of hitting against (not a lot of options there, given his career stats) and you'd bat him against lefties when AR was had an OPS of 1.200 against LHP earlier this year.
