Adley Rutschman 2x On-Base streak

He doesn't swing at bad pitches. He doesn't even swing at borderline pitches unless he's got 2 strikes.

He's got elite strike zone discipline. He's got elite bat speed. He's got it all. He definitely looks like a legit #1 prospect. His profile over the course of a season is going to be impressive.

Just missed a HR last night. Smashed a foul ball down the line the stadium had as 108 exit velo. His lefty uppercut swing is thing of beauty.

Just missed?  That ball was 100 feet foul.

Adley is a guy that can put up a bunch of 1 for 3 and 1 for 4 nights with some walks sprinkled in and people will ask when is he going to heat up and he'll have a .400+ OBP for the last month.  I really think this guy could put up a .270/.400/.500 line next year and be in the conversation for MVP.

I could have sworn that Kevin Brown said last night that Adley had tied the Orioles’ rookie record for consecutive games of reaching base twice, but looking at the list, I don’t see any rookies with 9 such games.   So, Adley holds that record so far as I’m concerned.   Granted, it’s one of the most obscure records ever conceived.   Now let’s see how far he can take it.

As to the question of whether Adley is “white hot,” in the nine games he’s hit .423/.556/.692, for a 1.248 OPS.   Looking at the 14 others who had a 9 game streak of reaching base twice, 9 had a higher BA during their streak, 7 had a higher OBP, 9 had a higher SLG, 8 had a higher OPS.  Certainly not an outlier on the low end (that would be Ken Singleton at .364/.523/.515 or Boig Powell at .346/.595/.462). So, since only 39 Orioles have ever had a streak that long in the franchise’s 69 years in Baltimore, I’m going to go ahead and call that white hot.  I do agree in general that it doesn’t really feel  like he’s white hot, though.

He definitely said tied.  And he said with Boog Powell.  I don't know if that's true but that's what he said.

I think he’s bound to finish Top 5 in MVP voting before his team control is up anyway. All the more reason not to delay the good ones.

It’s only this year that matters for the MVP voting affecting service time, I believe.

Is it? I’m trying to imagine a scenario where someone doesn’t finish top 3 in ROY but finishes top 5 in MVP or Cy Young.

I’m pretty sure.  Otherwise, you could call a guy up in August and he’d still get a full year of service time if he finished top 5 in the MVP voting 3 years later.   That’s not happening.

Did they ever settle on what type of draft pick compensation a team gets?

It looks like Powell had his streak extended by RoE (5/15-21/1962), so Adley has the record as I defined it and is tied with Powell as they apparently did.

Perhaps surprisingly, when RoEs are included, the number of 8-game streaks jumps from 85 to 108.

    • Does anybody know that he is an ex Yankee?
    • I put this ridiculousness in the game recap, but I think it belongs here as well.  Using AI you can really make some crazy stuff. 😂 https://suno.com/song/8f21dd9e-af4e-4284-9f23-c566260ca6ce
    • A buddy of mine made this with his AI. I figured I’d just put this here. 😂   https://suno.com/song/8f21dd9e-af4e-4284-9f23-c566260ca6ce
    • I was listening to MLB Prospects podcast last week. They talked about Gillen, and mentioned a lot about how he may be the best high school hitter. However, it’s a tough call where he’ll go because of a weak arm. They said the arm was injured, a right labrum, and his arm strength is not back after two years. So, probably wasn’t going to be a SS anyway when said and done due to size, maybe a 2B/LF or CF profile due to the weak arm and 60 speed. He was projected to maybe become the top high school player in the draft as a sophomore, but injured the shoulder and had some other injuries that have held him back. It is going to be interesting to see where Elias goes with picks 22 and 32. I would like to see Gillen there, but I think he’ll be gone. Kellon Lindsey is interesting, and maybe Billy Amick, along with one of the previous college hitters you mentioned will sneak through. Lindsey is rising fast.
    • A good friend of mine coaches college baseball.  He’s studied and dedicated his career to understanding how humans move. Not all humans move the same way.  An incredible talent could potentially be taught to move against his body’s preference and fail.  New wave progressive coaches understand how various body types work and the nuance to teach/coach them effectively.
    • I'm still trying to figure out how this guy is out of the majors for 7 years and somehow manages to pick up 2 MPH on his fastball, at the age of 34.  But hey, I'm not complaining.   Statcast loves him so far this year.  Statcast thought he was a little unlucky in his last stint in the majors, and unsurprisingly they think he's getting a little lucky now, but even accounting for his good luck he's still in great pitcher territory.
    • 2 "gutsy" starts in a row.  That's exactly what you want out of veterans to demonstrate to the young guys.
