Wacha is actually worse than Gibson because he has a poor health history and not many IP.

Id probably rather have Lyles to be honest…similar production but at least he’s reliable.

Lyles: 1.0 rWAR this year, -1.4 career; 1.4 fWAR/7.4 fWAR

Wacha is much better.  Not as durable, I agree.

The worst part is, they will spend 10M or so on him too.

So, you will have spent 20M on Gibson and Wacha.  You could have Eovaldi for less than that and he has real upside.

As with all these guys, it isn't as much how they compare with the 90-120 best SP in the game but how they compare with Watkins, Zimmermann, Baumann, etc.

You read it right, but I wrote it wrong.  Wacha has 13.4 fWAR in his career, Lyles 7.4.   I’ll fix it.

I agree with you. I suspect the organization was unwilling to go 3 years on anyone, which would eliminate Eovaldi from consideration. In his chat, Connolly made it sound like he wasn’t 100% sure they were willing to go to 2 years on anyone that remained on the market as of yesterday morning. I don’t care for the move if it happens.

His similarity score list on BBREF is mostly pretty meh.

Wacha has been worth 3.1 fWAR the last 5 seasons.  Lyles is 3.5 in the same time period.

In other words, most of Wacha’s best seasons are years ago and not relevant to today.  Now, 2022 was good but no one should even remotely think they can rely on him to do it again.
