Mateo Trade Potential

Elvis Andrus and Jose Iglesias are the last, cheap FA SSs.  MLB Network was discussing the trade market for SS now that the big 4 have signed and never even brought up Mateo.  They mentioned Crawford, DeJong, Kiner-Falefa, Rosario and Tatis.  That last one is hysterical.  I hope we make a trade here but I don't believe there's much value.

I doubt those last two get traded and out of the others, Mateo was better in 2022 and has still has quite a bit of team control left.  Boston is an interesting fit. They struck out (or didn't even try) on all of the FA SS and moving Story over there at this point is a questionable move.

It would be great to be able to trade Mateo for anything of value. I think Ortiz is going to be the superior player the moment he starts playing for the Orioles, so getting any sort of trade value for Mateo would be a big win, especially since he was a waiver wire reclamation project.

As much as the lack of free agent signings (and the underwhelming Frazier signing) have been disappointing, trading Mateo would be a fantastic move.

If the return was right yes. Can't be rolling the dice on international prospects or getting  Vavra/Nevin level prospects.

So far, Bradish is all Elias has to show at the major league level from his trades of Bleier, Givens, Castro, Bundy and Iglesias. Vavra has a chance to play at the major league level if someone is willing to live with his defense at second base or he gets better in the OF, but Nevin is not a major leaguer no matter how long Elias keeps him on the 40-man roster.

Totally agree, if the return is right.

I know Mateo has a weak bat, but his super plus defense, speed, and ability to steal bases make him an attractive starting SS, unless you can find a 5 tool guy to replace him with.

Mateo is a very difficult player to gauge. He was a poor offensive player last year, but was still worth 3.4 bWAR. I don't think you get back what an offensively driven 3 WAR player would get you, but I also think some GM out there could value the defense and speed enough (and dream on the bat based on his month hot stretch) to give something of value back.

Moving Mateo would then allow Urias to stay at 3B, Henderson to play at SS and Frazier to start at 2B until someone else proves themselves ready. It would make the Frazier signing make a bit more sense.

Mateo has to really play his ass off on defense and on the base paths to maintain that kind of WAR. Stealing bases will get a little easier next year, but infield defense is a little harder. If I'm another team, I have my doubts he'll be able to maintain that kind of production. I personally don't think his bat will suddenly come around, even though he can hit the ball hard at times.

It's super hard to gauge his trade value. Like others, if the return is a Seth Johnson type or some kind of ML-ready guy, I absolutely pull the trigger. If it's low-minors fliers or young international guys, no dice.

With the glut of high level middle infield prospects the Orioles have, taking offers on both Mateo and Urias makes a lot of sense.  And I think they both have quite a bit of trade value, more than most on here think. I like both of these guys, but if the return was strong enough I would trade them, due to the arrival of Ortiz, Westburg and now Frazier.

I like trading Mateo over Urias because Urias is dependably good at 3 infield positions and has the better bat. Would I entertain trading both, sure, but you're starting to roll the dice with your infield depth at that point and putting a lot of eggs in the Westburg/Oritz basket.

I can't wait for the Elias special - multiple low ranked prospects where they are regarded as long shots and maybe one of them is a AAAA player.

When has he traded anyone who has been a highly regarded player?  They were all dealt before he took over.

    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
