Trade targets: Starters and Bullpen

Wouldn't be shocked to see the O's and Cards match up.

The Cardinals look to be out of contention and unless they make a run before the trade deadline, they might move one or more of their solid bullpen arms. Jeff Passan has suggested they might be looking at a fire sale and that every player on their roster is potentially available.

Ryan Helsley's 100MPH fastball would be a nice compliment to Bautista and Cano. Flaherty may also be on the block and benefit from a change of teams.

I know this is a pitching thread but Goldschmidt in the middle of our lineup makes my tongue swell up.

What do you think it would cost to pull off a blockbuster type deal for Goldschmidt and Flaherty or Montgomery? Goldy has 1 more year left on his deal and I believe Flaherty and Montgomery are both FAs after this year.

I’m all for making a run at Goldschmidt but Mountcastle has to be in the deal for me to do it. If for no reason than the roster makeup. (unless of course Mounty is dealt in a different deal at the same time)

I do wonder if Elias would trade a lot for a mid 30s RH hitter..plus I doubt JA would authorize his salary.

Pretty sure he has a no trade clause as well.

Great question, I would love to know the answer.

I would agree with @Sports Guy I am including Mountcastle in the deal.

Mountcastle, Hall/Norby, Bassalo/ Willhelms, lottery ticket.

Does that get it done? Cards are shedding salary and getting younger. MLB player, 2 borderline top 100 prospects and a lottery ticket seems pretty solid.

I don’t know if the Cards would be willing to accept this or not. But I would try to throw Urias in there if they would accept him. If not we would need to try to deal a separate deal involving him. Maybe one that is for a BP piece?

The more I look at this and the guys potentially available, the more I think they either try to get Cease or an elite reliever arm like Helsley.  Cease fits the Verlander mold.  Elite starter who doesn’t seem quite the same.  Might be slightly discounted but has true #1 upside and can see is clearly better going forward than what they have.   I tend to prefer the elite bullpen arm though.  I 5ink there will be more options, they will cost less, and I am not convinced other starters on the market are better than what they have if G-Rod gets straightened out.

Urias for Cease!!!!

If only…lol

In all seriousness, Cease has not thrown the ball too well this year and the CHI SOX are trying to climb back in their division race. So, I don’t think Cease is under consideration by either team.

He also has to be a 10 and 5 guy as well.  Though I would think he might wave it if he thinks a team has chance at World Series title.

He is in his 5th season with St Louis, so I’m not sure he qualifies as a 10/5 guy yet or not.  I thought you had to complete 5 seasons?

I know it’s 10 years and 5 consecutive years with your current org. Does a partial season count as the 5th year or do you need to complete it?  Not seeing anything concrete either way.

Not that it matters since PG has a full NTC anyway.

There are 8 weeks before the trade deadline.  Long time before teams need to decide whether they’re sellers.

Honestly, that’s why I don’t pay much attention to threads like these in early June.  The season is only 59 games in, and it’ll be 106 games in at the deadline.  A million things can change between now and then.  If I were king of the realm, trade deadline threads wouldn’t even exist until the all star break at the earliest.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
