Cole Irvin

wildcard

He threw 76% of his pitches for strikes today. He’s successful when his command and control are good and that is why they acquired him.

If he isn’t doing that, he gets crushed. If he does, he’s a serviceable back end starter and was well worth trading for.

Pretty much agree completely with this. He got ironed out in Norfolk and hopefully this is him moving forward.

Irvin pitched about as well as could be hoped today. No walks, no homers. He’s going to need some solid defense behind him, but the greatest favor Hyde did was pulling him “early” in the 6th, assuring he would have a positive pitching line for the day. Hopefully that gives him some confidence going forward against tougher opponents.

Irvin will be a test of whether the defense has actually improved any - OAA still thinks BAL is MLB worst.     He'll use them a lot if he's on his game.

Maikel Garcia hitting 5th at the end of the 1st inning - Irvin benefitted from a .350 SLG in the middle of a lineup (thanks, Royals).     Garcia still almost took him out.      Santander got the play made with excitement, but it also seemed to me the kind of ball a very good RF (or perhaps Hays, if Cowser were here) may have made look more routine.

Irvin's 2nd through 4th innings were smoother, but, as you point out, required good defense, e.g. Frazier's grab and 180-turn jump throw behind second, and he got 3 Ks that I'm not sure he gets against Eastern Div. teams.

A better rightfielder than Santander might have run a deeper, faster route and ended up banging into the fence and either gotten shaken up or dropped the ball. Santander's stopping short to do a perfectly timed leap was safer, although it didn't win any style points.
