How Many Stick Around to Next Year?

I've gleaned from the forums that this is a pretty naturalistic team, with no real ace in the hole players - a lot of great players raising up. I've also heard that our salary budget is pretty low in comparison to other teams - If I'm incorrect than feel free to correct me.

My question is: I'm gonna assume that salaries being sought are going to be increasing...  what are the odds of the team looking similar next year?

How long do contracts usually last? I thought that in other sports, players could get out of a contract if wanted. How does that all work?

When a player comes up with a team, they are under team control for 6-7 years. They make the minimum $700k for the first few years, then escalating amounts based on an arbitration system. They can't go to another team unless they are "designated for assignment", and then they have to go to whoever claims them.

They aren't free agents until the end of the 6-7 years.

Most of the Orioles are under team control at least through next year. Frazier and Gibson will be free agents free to sign with other teams. Hicks is also a free agent but his salary is already paid by the Yankees, so he has no incentive to go anywhere as long as the O's want to keep him.

I’m betting the 1 year left guys like Santander are gone as well.

I doubt they trade Means as long as he is productive and the team is contending.  Santander is traded only if he isn't producing or one of the young guys proves he's ready to take over for him.  But if Santander is having a career year then I think all bets are off.

Santander is a funny guy to watch... at one point I was hyping him big-time to the rest of the family.. then he went on a forever no-hit streak once they started paying attentio *lol facepalm*. Dude POWERS the ball every time he connects (foul or not) .. yet I'd rather have another Hays or Henderson.

We are most likely contending next year - No reason to deal Santander unless we vastly disappoint. He’s not Manny so whomever we get back is t lineky to be better than guys already on the roster or in AAA. If we are close it isn’t worth a low A guy to move him because he can win a game at any time with his bat.

They said their plan is the Rays model. You can expect them to move players rather than sign them long term. The guy you need long term is Henderson and Bradish.

I think it’s very possible they send Santander & Mullins. If Means would agree to a team friendly deal it’s possible he gets a 2-3 year extension.

    • the question isn’t about being able to make the offers, it’s about being awarded compensatory picks for more than one.
    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
    • The team's continued success has really put Elias on the spot IMO and I don't see a Flaherty type as an option anymore.  My money is on a sensible trade that comes at a price high enough that most of us here, including myself, won't like, but a premium comes with having bad luck and that's where the O's are at the moment.
