I say let Mayo play too. But everyone here on this page  knows that. My reason is slightly different.Urias ISNT our future, he hasn't hit that well either. His defense has been ok but not Gold Glove. If the Orioles are worried about Mayo's defense let him DH. The kid needs at bats to get his feet under him. It's rare for ANY new call up let alone a 22 year old to be an instant success.Let him play.

I don’t want Mayo rotting on the bench, but he doesn’t need to play every day, either.  Urias probably gives us a better chance to win right now.  He’s not a Gold Glover but he’s a much steadier defender than Mayo.  Eventually Mayo will outhit Urias, but not necessarily right now.  It’s tricky to balance making the move that gives you the best chance to win today vs. the move that will develop a player who will help you win down the road.   I don’t expect Hyde to go 100% in either direction.  He’ll try to do some of both.

It could be if the rest of the defense was playing better they would be willing to put Mayo out there.  But with our defense looking so bad, maybe they see Urias as a steadying force.

I’d still have Mayo DH’ing over Jimenez though.

Why? Jimenez is hot right now and has been hitting much better than Mayo who is still trying to get his sea legs.

If you are trying to win, shouldn't you play the hot hand?

I’d prefer they let Mayo try to get his bat going and use Urias as his defensive replacement in most games, but I’m fine with them letting Urias split starts since they reasonably could think he gives them a better chance to win right now.

They just better not keep Mayo on the MLB roster the rest of the season and lose his ROY eligibility for next year if he’s going to be riding the bench in a lot of games. Play him half time, let him figure out what he needs to work on, send him back to AAA for a couple weeks to play everyday and work on those adjustments. Ideally once Westburg has come back, if the timing permits.

I’m guessing Mayo starts tonight and Jackson has night off.  Not sure who Orioles think will back up Rasmussen.

I’ll guess

Cowser

Tony

Gunnar

Mountcastle

Adley

Eloy

Mullins

Urias

Mayo

I’m guessing Alexander. Maybe Slater even gets a start over Mullins.

Mullins 0 for 11 vs this guy. O'Hearn shouldn't be on the bench vs a RHP. My guess:

Cowser CF, Santander RF, Gunnar SS, O'Hearn RF, Adley C, RMC 1B, Holliday 2B, Mayo DH, Urias 3B

I’m thinking they go lefty after Rasmussen. Not sure how long he lasts. Maybe Cowser doesn’t hit Leadoff either …

Im already changing my lineup…

I’ll put Gunnar there now.
Gunnar

Tony

Mountcastle

Adley

Eloy

Cowser

Slater

Mayo

Urias

Final changes  😆

    • Just hoping we get Westy, Kjerstad, Mounty, Urias back on the roster soon for Soto/Rivera/Jimenez/Maton. Such a huge upgrade is possibly soon. Missing Mateo a lot as well, especially vs lefties.  Vs RHP: SS Gunnar CF Mullins 3B Westburg RF Santander LF Cowser 1B O'Hearn/Mounty C Adley DH Kjerstad 2B Holliday vs LHP: SS Gunnar 2B Westy RF Santander 1B Mounty C Adley 3B Urias CF Cowser LF Slater DH Kjerstad/Mayo?
    • Kimbrel has a club option too, should be the two easiest decisions. But I am sure they will make it complicated
    • I was not saying this will happen, or predicting this to happen. It is very much not likely to happen as you pointed out- and we agree on that. But just because they haven't gone 4-14 so far this year, doesnt mean its not a possibility. In the last 18, for example, they are 8-10 as you have pointed out. Of those 8 wins, 5 of them came against three of the worst teams in baseball- Rockies/White Sox/Rays (5-4). We dont have teams like that left on the schedule. Do we get to 8 wins out of 18 without playing half of the games against three of the worst teams in baseball? Maybe, maybe not. Another 2 of the wins came in the Astros series which took a heroic grand slam, and an unlikely pinch hit 3 run double from Holliday. Both of those hits came on the backs of Astros defensive miscues, and both of those hits came in games that we were otherwise lifeless/hapless like we have been for the majority of the last 70+ games. We were very fortunate to come away with two wins during that series.  Again, I am not saying that we are going to go 4-14 to finish the season, and crazily enough 4-14 could still be enough to get into the playoffs even if it DID happen. If we went 4-14, the Red Sox/Mariners would have to go 14-4 over that same stretch to pass us, or the TIgers would have to go 13-5 (if they take the tie breaker). Its just something that seemed impossible 3 days ago, and now it may end up being something to monitor.
    • Reminds me of the Nats with Papelbom. Need to excise that wart now.
    • This team needs the obvious jolt and the timing for the injured cavalry coming back is hopefully soon but time is short and we need wins.   I have to think Kimbrel at this point is viewed as "washed" by his teammates and just adds to this negative karma that exists even when they see him in the dugout and not even pitching.   Time for addition by subtraction now for both him and Smith.  We are at the point of definition of insanity territory by hanging onto both.
    • He’s like the type of player you’d get if they had a lottery at fan fest for a fan to be a player for a year.
    • My hot take is that we are at adjustment time.  The Orioles figured out an approach that was working.  They weren’t walking as much but were putting up a ton of runs.  Other teams adjusted to the approach.  The question now is whether the Orioles can adjust back.  So far, not so good.
