Anthony Santander 2024

Last year Santander had a .241 OBP/.491 OPS after 14 games.  Hyde’s not going to be that reactive to every slump a player has.

Last year was last year. And the offense needed to take a step forward from last year in order to be a contender.

The Orioles are on pace to score 880 runs, which is 73 more than last year.   Individual players are going to have ups and downs during the year.

I’m tired of seeing this .230 OBP black hole penciled into the heart of the lineup card every game.
He would bat 7th and start about 60% of the games for a legit contender.

And You could say the exact same thing about Gunnar.

Not really. Gunnar is among the league leaders in hard hit balls. Similar to Westburg, odds are, he will start catching some breaks.

Santander is chasing twice as much as Gunnar and is toward the bottom of the league in hard hit %

I felt this way last year during his slow start. We all know how that turned out.

I think I remember hearing something last year that he thrives in the hot weather/hates the cold. It’ll be above 70 today and it’ll be getting consistently much warmer than that soon, so hopefully his bat heats up accordingly.

I think the number that best sums up Santander’s current slump is his 27% infield fly/fly ball rate.  He’s also got a .27 GO/AO ratio right now, less than half his normal rate.  Simply put, he’s getting under the ball much too often right now.  I have complete confidence he will straighten that out and go on a tear eventually.

How was he once it cooled off last fall, in September and October?

Santander is an incredibly streaky hitter. He is always up and down. Last year he would go on a complete tear and then look like garbage for 40 at bats.

Everything, good and bad, is exacerbated early in the season.

There could be something to it. For his career he has a .636 March/April OPS, .645 Sept/Oct OPS, but every other month is much higher.

Meh.  Santander has not been playing well since the second half of last year.  He had a couple "streaky" months (May 2023 & August 2023) but statistically everything from the second half and into this season, is not pretty.

We got some young guys (Stowers / Kjerstad) knocking on the door but are we going to just stick it out with him this season.... we know we are not re-signing him, maybe it's time to explore some options.

I think most hitters are pretty streaky, moreso than people think.  And yes, it stands out when someone is hot or cold to begin the year.

When I was a kid, I followed the Rod Carew rule: no statistics meant anything until Rod Carew was leading the league in batting.   That worked pretty well while Carew won 6 batting titles in 7 years (he finished 3rd by two points the other year).   Nowadays, I basically generally don’t take stats too seriously until the end of May.

    • I don't get why everyone on here is in love with "potential" instead of "results." I remember last year when Means was rehabbing in the minors this board was saying he'd maybe be a bullpen piece. I was thinking, "Do these people not remember 'John Means day'? The guy knows how to pitch and gets results. I trust him WAY more than Grayson. Sadly Means got hurt and didn't get a chance to pitch in the playoffs. When the playoffs roll around in 2024, if Suarez still has a 1.57 ERA and .99 WHIP, I'm giving him the damn ball way before I give to a guy with a 3.53 ERA and 1.33 WHIP who has a career 27 ERA In the post-season.  Don't misunderstand me, Grayson has a TON of potential but he's reminding me a lot of Kevin Gausman at this point in his career - a guy who repeatedly got our hopes up as being a dominant TOR guy but never was for us. Suarez has a 1.2 WAR this year in 34 innings. Grayson has a 0.5 in 51 innings. If we had to pick a top 3 for the playoffs tomorrow, I wouldn't put Grayson as the #3.
    • I hear you on the 19 year olds. I don’t buy it as an absolute. There is data both ways. COVID is still a factor too. Depends on the kid. Each player is judged on their own merits. Bobby Witt Jr. was 19 when drafted. 🤷🏼‍♂️
    • Lindsey reminds me of Trea Turner at the same age. Not a comp, just a similar player. I watched Amick and Christian Moore last night. I don’t have enough to give an opinion. I thought both were interesting talents and athletes. I am concerned about Santucci right now. I can understand wanting a college arm, depends on health and track record.
    • Wrong, Idiot. Mullins is too bad to use.
    • Re: Tanner Scott. I looked up his baseball savant page and laughed out loud.    https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/tanner-scott-656945?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb Check out his BB rate.   Laff laff laff…. Everything else is pretty good. I was mistaken about his stats-wise, but I still don’t want to trade for him. I just know he’d turn back into a pumpkin.
    • Eh, this was his first definitively bad start IMO. He was always going to go downhill from the ~1 ERA he posted in April. I'm still interested in seeing him called up for Suarez's spot, though I'm guessing he won't at this point with Suarez already taking two turns and performing well.
    • Bradley has pretty distinct splits. I think we throw all the LH bats at him tonight: (If Westburg is ready) Gunnar - SS Adley - C O'Hearn - 1B Santander - RF Cowser - LF Westburg - 3B Stowers - DH Mateo - 2B Mullins - CF
