Mike Trout To Undergo Knee Surgery

This dude is washed.  Not because of talent - we've seen this  month he's got plenty of that left.  But the guy is never going to be on the field long enough to show it again, that much seems clear.

Is his HOF candidacy already assured, or no?  If not its going to get dicey as to whether he's even a HOFer now, which is pretty shocking.

I think he already has the numbers to be in the Hall.  The writers make exceptions for guys they love like Koufax and Puckett.  But they probably deserved it anyway as well.

You cant be the undisputed best player in MLB for six years and not go into the Hall.

How many massive ten year contracts work out?  I don't really understand why teams don't just balk at the length and let some other sap team do it.   This last time Machado pulled out of his contract I would of let him walk.

You wait and see the Dodgers will regret signing Ohtani in the next three or four years.

Dodgers will be fine.  They'll make way more than 400M out of the Ohtani deal.

He's such a unicorn he comes with his own revenue streams.

I think you’re both right, he’s in. Sad that’s it even remotely debatable though.

I don’t think it is debatable.  You’re the first person I’ve ever seen suggest that he might not be a HOFer.

He's already a HOF.  It's just that his injuries have killed his chances of being an Inner Circle HOF.

Just curious, where do you draw the “inner circle” line?  Opinions can vary about that.  I’d say Trout still has a decent shot at 100 rWAR, which in addition to being a beautiful round number, would put him in the top 22 position players of all time.  Is the inner circle tighter than that?

This may be a situation where WAR doesn’t define the inner circle.  He won’t get close to 3000 hits.  He’s maybe a 50/50 shot to teach 500 homers, and almost certainly won’t hit 600.   He’s never been on a WS team.  He’s had 100 RBI only 3 times.  So maybe 100 WAR isn’t enough for inner circle in his case?

With 86.3 career bWar, he looks like a near lock for the HOF. But his best days are far behind him. Will turn 33 on the IL. He's only played in 100+ games one season since 2019 and that was just 119.

He's a lock.

He's been a lock.

Could retire today to follow his dream of being a meteorologist.

Except that he's got that massive extension until he's 38 to keep playing for. I dont think he'll be retiring anytime soon. He's still productive and likely will continue to be, but probably a good idea not to play him in CF anymore. It seems like none or at least very few of these 30 year+ extensions ever work out.

Looks like?  He was a lock 4 years ago.

At this point, he’s just adding to his legacy.

What it looks like is that he is heading on a path of being more Griffey Jr than Bonds.

    • Not Tony, but he’s going to start out on one of the DSL teams again.  Was hoping maybe he’d start at FCL. Maybe he lights up DSL and only has a short stay in the Dominican?
    • He's accepted an option before when he was struggling iirc, but they can't just option him, he has to agree and he probably would, he's always been a team guy. Nothing changes with his pay.
    • I don’t disagree. You could make a lot of cases for or against acceptable production (or lack thereof) based of player level and respective age. I simply don’t think this player is a must keep as many are insinuating. Luckily we’re all just armchair GMs and can hazard guesses and opinions all day long without real repercussion.
    • In September, we'll look back at this as the low point of the season. I'm watching the A's and Rockies in the 12th inning right now and these are some bad offenses.   Although - there are several Oakland pitchers I would love to have in the Baltimore bull pen.
    • Well I didn’t realize that.  I just read he had options.  I would at least say look if he agrees to go down he will at least play.  I don’t know what his pay structure is if he chooses to be optioned.  If it results in a pay cut then I wouldn’t do it in that case.
    • @Tony-OH do we know anything about why Liranzo hasn’t played in a game at an affiliate this season? I haven’t seen anything indicating that he is injured. If Liranzo is not injured, it seems odd that he wouldn’t be playing given the positive press he has received here and elsewhere.
    • Big kid for a catcher. Has pop, stance reminds me a little of O’Hearn. No idea how he is defensively but this guy looks to be every part of a backup catcher someday until Basallo makes his way through the minors. Excellent trade for both teams.
