Kjerstad's Defense

Hard to do that when he's only allowed to start once every 4 or 5 games, or less. The way Elias and Hyde have handled Kjerstad's playing time has been terrible. He never should have been called up to rot on the bench. Westburg and Cowser were mishandled the same way, they both would have been much bigger contributors last season if they had been given everyday playing time instead of getting platooned/benched for significantly less talented veterans.

So who would you have brought up instead?  Stowers?  I guess you could have but I don't see the difference.

He wasn't brought up to play, he was brought up to fill out the roster due to injury.

I don’t think the way the Orioles handled Westburg fits your narrative at all.  He was on the team for 86 games and played in 68 of them, including 54 starts.  He got way more playing time than either Cowser or Kjerstad.  I wouldn’t say he was platooned, either.  He had 30 starts vs. RHP, 24 vs. LHP.  I’m sure he sat more often vs. RHP than LHP, but he still had plenty of chances against both.

Kjerstad had a promising start last year and I had hoped that would carry on into this year, similar to Westburg. It hasn’t happened yet, but he really hasn’t been given much of a chance. In my opinion he is Santander’s replacement next year, maybe with a bit more time at DH. So I think once Hays is back we’ll see him sent back down and he’ll be back and forth sparingly. Then we all just gotta hold out hope he can be the slugger we think he can be in 2025.

Didn't Frazier losing his job have something to do with that?

I think that’s the issue right? He wasn’t brought up to play? That seems silly. You have 2 vets that are very inconsistent and are not hitting their weight, so there is plenty of opportunities to get Heston at bats besides once every 4-5 games. Plus it’s silly to not give regulars at least a day off every now and then so you could have O’HIM at first and Heston DH. We have the players to keep everyone fresh throughout the year.

I couldn't watch on TV today but on radio, Melanie said he jumped early in the 3rd on that double.  Is that what you guys saw too?

I was at the game and had a great view of the play as was in row 2 upper box 358; he actually made a good run to the ball going full speed but the ball popped out of his glove.

He should be fine in RF with more reps as other have mentioned but the canyon of left field may not be the best for him.

The Dbacks definitely had a plan of attack to scorch a lot of balls his way.

In fairness, Kjerstad was is the starting lineup right after being called up and struck out three out of four at bats.  He was overmatched.  He hasn't looked good at the plate, in terms of consistent contact or driving the ball.  Do we keep running that out there every  night and leave O'Hearn on the bench?  Some might say yes, he needs to get consistent at bats.  How did that work for Jackson Holliday, who was equally overmatched.?

O'Hearn is not overmatched, and gives consistent, quality professional at bats.  I don't understand why people can't see that O'Hearn  earned his playing time by actually performing when given the chance.  And, as much as people don't want to hear this, even McKenna hasn't struggled as mightily since his recall as Kjerstad and Holliday did.

By the way, my previous comment wasn't directed at you specifically.....you appear to also be an O'Hearn supporter.

Do you honestly believe that the DBacks had a game plan to hit the ball (or scorch it) to Kjerstad?   Seriously???  Please tell me no.

My question is how does one overcome that? It’s a timing issue sure, but like, if you don’t play at all, or come off the bench randomly does that help either? Perhaps it’s just being aggressive? I honestly don’t know, but O’Hearn was an adventure in right, him being out in left just seems like a recipe for disaster. That being said, his bat is about as consistent as you can get so let’s see what happens today!

Enough off days built into the early part of the season to keep guys fresh.

Your view couldn’t have been that good.  It didn’t pop out of his glove because his glove didn’t touch it.

How many damn question marks do you need?

    • A little funny to have provided descriptions of the hits (“weak” single; “500 foot” HR). FIP doesn’t care about any of that either, so it’s kind of an odd thing to add in an effort to make ERA look bad.  Come in, strike out the first hitter, then give up three 108 MPH rocket doubles off the wall. FIP thinks you were absolutely outstanding, and it’s a shame your pathetic defense and/or sheer bad luck let you down. Next time you’ll (probably) get the outcomes you deserve. They’re both flawed. So is xFIP. So is SIERA. So is RA/9. So is WPA. So is xERA. None of them are perfect measures of how a pitcher’s actual performance was, because there’s way too much context and too many variables for any one metric to really encompass.  But when I’m thinking about awards, for me at least, it ends up having to be about the actual outcomes. I don’t really care what a hitter’s xWOBA is when I’m thinking about MVP, and the same is true for pitchers. Did you get the outs? Did the runs score? That’s the “value” that translates to the scoreboard and, ultimately, to the standings. So I think the B-R side of it is more sensible for awards.  I definitely take into account the types of factors that you (and other pitching fWAR advocates) reference as flaws. So if a guy plays in front of a particular bad defense or had a particularly high percentage of inherited runners score, I’d absolutely adjust my take to incorporate that info. And I also 100% go to Fangraphs first when I’m trying to figure out which pitchers we should acquire (i.e., for forward looking purposes).  But I just can’t bring myself say that my Cy Young is just whichever guy had the best ratio of Ks to BBs to HRs over a threshold number of innings. As @Frobby said, it just distills out too much of what actually happened.
    • We were all a lot younger in 2005.  No one wanted to believe Canseco cause he’s a smarmy guy. Like I said, he was the only one telling the truth. It wasn’t a leap of faith to see McGwire up there and Sosa up there and think “yeah, those guys were juicing” but then suddenly look at Raffy and think he was completely innocent.  It’s a sad story. The guy should be in Hall of Fame yet 500 homers and 3,000 hits are gone like a fart in the wind cause his legacy is wagging his finger and thinking he couldn’t get caught.  Don’t fly too close to the sun.
    • I think if we get the fun sprinkler loving Gunnar that was in the dugout yesterday, I don’t think we have to worry about him pressing. He seemed loose and feeling good with the other guys he was with, like Kremer.
    • I was a lot younger back then, but that betrayal hit really hard because he had been painting himself as literally holier than thou, and shook his finger to a congressional committee and then barely 2 weeks later failed the test.
    • Not bad, but Mullins needs to be at Centerfield for his range, glove, and defensive ability. Top teir premium defense cannot be underestimated. Kjerstad will be on the bench. I think the question is whether Slater or Cowser plays. I would prefer Ramirez over Slater if they need another right handed bat. Sig needs to look at Adleys recent sample sizes vs LHP before making him DH. McCann is catching for Burnes and hitting the left handed pitcher. He's also on a hot streak.
    • I’m slightly (irrationally, I admit, there’s no factual basis for what I’m about to say) worried that Gunnar is going to view this as the “Gunnar vs. Bobby” show and press hard at the plate and in the field leading to bad at bats and unforced errors.
    • Sounds like getting your heart broken by big league ballplayers is a personal problem. Learn and adjust accordingly. These guys usually aren’t trying to be role models and he played in an era where a lot of players were on the gas. Was I surprised? Yeah, a little bit.  No one likes to admit Jose Canseco was the most honest one up there that day and was telling the truth the entire time.
