The 2024 70+ Game Score Thread

So far, the Orioles rotation has thrown 11 games receiving a game score of 70 or higher.  By that measure, here are the best games pitched by an Oriole this year:

Nice to see 5 different pitchers represented on this list.  I plan to keep it updated each time we get a 70 game score outing.  Will anyone top Bradish’s 84?   That won’t be easy.  

For those unfamiliar with Game Score, here’s the definition from BB-ref:

1. Start with 50 points.
2. Add 1 point for each out recorded, so 3 points for every complete inning pitched.
3. Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.
4. Add 1 point for each strikeout.
5. Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.
6. Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.
7. Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.
8. Subtract 1 point for each walk.

I haven’t updated this since the OP, mostly because there have only been two games of 70+ game score since then, which is indicative of how our starting pitching has been.  The two new entries are highlighted in bold.

How does this compare with teams like cleveland and NY?

I just did a search for “AL pitching game score rankings by team” and got nothing. I’m terrible at internet searches.

Probably worth noting that New York’s most recent 70 game was July 22 (Rodon’s 77), and that they only have two 70 games since June 4. 13 of their 16 such games occurred in April and May. Sounds familiar.

By way of one other comparison, Seattle has 26 such games, which leads the league. NYY ranks 8th with their 16, we are 18th with our 13, and CLE actually brings up the rear of the entire league with their 5. There are 16 individual pitchers in the league with more 70 games than CLE’s whole rotation (led by Seth Lugo with 9).

Never would have guessed that about Cleveland. Looking at their recent drafts, they appear to be the anti-Orioles when it comes to draft and dev strategy.

I have Stathead through Baseball-Reference, which makes these things a lot more manageable (for a monthly fee).

I’ve been searching around for a source that has sortable individual game score rankings without the subscription aspect — I’m not sure one exists. If you go to the Fangraphs player game logs, you can sort each individual pitcher’s games by their “Game Score 2.0” (GSv2) and it will give you a combined score for the year. And you can do the same thing in the Baseball-Reference game logs with original game score. 

But unfortunately I can’t find an individualized “rankings” of game scores anywhere. Sorry!

Coming into today, teams had won 82.1% (341 out of 415) of games when their starter posted a 70 game score.

It’s a real accomplishment by the other 25 guys on the roster to manage to pull out a loss despite the SP’s excellence.

Nine different pitchers have recorded a 70+ game score for the O's this year: 3 for Burnes, 2 for Bradish, Kremer, Eflin, Irvin and Rodriguez, and 1 each for Means, Suarez and Povich.   That's a total of 16.

This scoring system completely disregards the opponent.

Povich's last start wasn't in the top 11? That kind of discredits this score. Yes, it was against the WS, but this is not taken into account by this score.
