Orioles Announcers calling the team Baltimore

Am I the only one that it bothers when Orioles announcers call the team Baltimore instead of the Orioles? 

Brett Hollander, who is a Baltimore guy and actually an announcer I enjoy listening to, is the main offender though I've heard others occasionally do it as well, though much less. It makes them sound like the other team's announcers or a generic National announcer. 

I just don't get it. "Our" announcers should be calling the team the Orioles. I mean, if someone asks you what's your favorite baseball team, do you say Baltimore? Have you ever asked your friends, "How about that Baltimore game last night?" Have you ever asked another Orioles fan what the score of the Baltimore game?

Nope. We call them the Orioles and I'm not sure why Hollander insists on calling them Baltimore vs the Orioles more times than not. He's from here and I know he's an Orioles fan. I've met Brett and he had me on his show back when he was doing Orioles talk on WBAL. I like the guy, and I know he's a knowledgeable Orioles fan so I just don't get it. On top of it, I know he knows he's announcing the game for Orioles fans and not a national audience.

And probably the most frustrating thing is I really enjoy his game calling, but every time I hear him say Baltimore, it makes me cringe. 

Am I alone here?

He knows the new owner won’t discipline him so he’s on a free roll…

Jokes aside, that’s weird. I haven’t heard it to this point, because if I did I’m sure I would do a double take. Also weird that you say he’s an Os guy, that type of stuff usually comes from the ill-informed.

I don't see the issue, he's just mixing up what he calls the team.  I'm sure they all use 'the Orioles' a lot, and a few sprinkle in a 'Baltimore' reference.  The team is representing the city, I don't see the issue with mentioning the city.

I do get that it sounds more like a national guy, but there are plenty of references to 'the Orioles' and anyone who is paying attention (not implying here that you aren't, Tony) can tell its clearly the home team broadcast.

As a Maryland native living far from home — I tend to say the whole thing when talking in another state about my team and call them the Baltimore Orioles.

However, I understand the point being made, because when I visit home and am talking with family, it’s O’s, Birds or Orioles when talking baseball. When back in Maryland, I don’t even say Baltimore, I roll with Bal’mere when telling folks I’m headed to the city.

In my mind, after following the team for 58 years, Baltimore and the Orioles are synonymous.  Call them Baltimore, call them the Orioles, call them the Birds, call them the O’s, I don’t care.  Just call them winners.

      In terms of energy?   e = 1/2 mv^2 football: 60 mph -> 26.8 m/s, 14.5 oz = .411 kg.  1/2 * (26.8^2) * .411 = 147.5 joules. baseball: 102 mph -> 45.59 m/s, 5 oz = .142 kg.  1/2 * (45.59^2) * .142 = 147.5 joules.   I don't think they're 100% equivalent - I think the higher raw speed on the arm of a 102 mph pitch introduces more stress on the arm than a 60 mph football throw.  But they're not that far off.

      There is no chance that over 60 mph for a QB is the equivalent of 102.  QBs do not train for velocity like pitchers do.

      I would prefer they ask for Jon Gray in spite of the Orioles destroying him in his last start - he wouldn't have to face the Orioles lineup again.

      He makes $43 million this year. The Mets are paying $21 million of that. I don’t think we pick up the remaining $10+ post deadline for 10-12 starts. It would just depend on what Texas would ask for to pick up the tab.

      Haynie on 105.7, has been beating the Luis Robert drum for months on the O’s pre game show. So I think that’s why people like the idea of Robert. Robert also is always hurt.  We need a bat. Probably a RH bat to DH in the playoffs versus a LH SP. That bat is Mayo. It’s just hard to get Mayo up before September when we get the extra roster spot.

      Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.

      This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
