Well I think a lot of people (not you) are just looking at his 2024 WAR or whatever and assuming he's trash. He was injured a lot of the year. I think if we use him in a role where he is likely to succeed, he's going to surprise. He's been on the White Sox his whole career, that has to suck. I dunno, I just like this move.

He has Trumbo/Cruz type ceiling.  However, we have the big LF and Wall now.

If you want O'Hearn and Holliday as platoon players in October, I guess against Ragans or Framber or Rodon or Nestor, you could max out with 3B Mayo, 2B Westburg, 1B Mountcastle, DH Eloy.

That would kind of be the infield's spin on the max offense Kjerstad-Cowser-Santander outfield unit we have now seen a very small number of times.

Burnes or Grayson ought to get a lot of strikeouts that night.

Eloy is exciting adjacent to Gerrit Cole as a big talent on a Central team that maybe never knew how to optimize his talents.    The Fangraphs article on him mentioned his ground ball proclivity, something I am sure Orioles PD will get to work on drumming out of him.     He reminds me of Yandy a little as a powerful seeming guy who knows how to hit.

To the extent I've joked Elias likes talent sets in twos like Noah's Ark, Eloy as a White Sox has kind of lived out a "bad case" outcome relative to what I hope for Samuel Basallo.

I think the answer is None of the Above, but today it is maybe an interesting prop bet would Elias venture ~$13M in 2025 cash on Craig Kimbrel or Eloy Jimenez.    The Orioles will get all the freshest data to formulate a 2025 bid assuming Eloy needs a pillow contract at more like half that number.

Hmmm, is Elias thinking Eloy is unoptimized Basallo?  Minus the catching skill of course.  Eloy was like the #5 prospect when the WS got him and sort of pegged for superstardom.  He's had a couple good year but then been declining.  Will be amazing if Elias can unlock what made him a top prospect or even get him back to an above average hitter.

141 OPS+ just 2 years ago.  That high.

The dream scenario is like Jorge Soler on the 2021 Braves.    Ryan O'Hearn it was just like stand up straight, right?    He's probably a bust relative to what he was hoped to be, but it is a fun minute to see if anything sparks.

With apologies to Roy, I would guess Eloy Jimenez has a better chance to be ALCS MVP than Coby Mayo, even if say it was the Astros rather than the Orioles who acquired him yesterday.

Rays keeping Yandy and neither HOU/NYY being able to do much about 1B was an unexpected perk yesterday.

High reward?  He's a weak side DH.  How high can the reward be?

Pretty high if he gets some big hits off lefties in important games. We're talking about 2 months of a season and very limited ABs. He's not going to accumulate significant WAR or something. We're going to see if he gets hot down the stretch against lefties. It's a targeted dice roll on a guy with offensive upside in very specific scenarios where he might succeed. That's what part of the season we're in.

Do you want a guy who once hit 30 bombs and has 5 years in the league facing a lefty in a big game, or do you want Mayo or Kjerstad? Give me the experience right now and see how that goes. If it doesn't work out, Mayo will get his shot inevitably.

Don't really need all that, even. Just hit a double somewhere. He knows the league and has pop. It's a worthy gamble to take.

None of the top AL left handed pitchers this year are Randy Johnson, but the Jeff Reboulet game is such a fun part of Orioles lore.

Davey put Roberto Alomar, BJ Surhoff and Rafael Palmeiro on his bench starting out that day.

Austin Slater batting in the 1st inning of ALDS Game 1 you gotta admit would be a sweet Reboulet homage.

Like I said, he has an .042 ISO since coming off the IL on June 23, playing virtually every day.  Anyone expecting him to provide a lot of power is likely to be very disappointed.

What's Adley's ISO since June 23? Haha.

The "playing every day" part might be part of the problem. I think we'll use him in specific scenarios and see if he clicks.

Profar is another late bloomer upside case. Eloy has Santanderish 1.6 WAR/162 games when healthy. Having a down year now but only 27. Seemed like a great deal for Chicago when they gave him the extension. I'm just having a hard time seeing where he fits aside from platooning with O'Hearn.

Don't forget Geronimo Berroa. Everyone forgets Geronimo! He is also a really good comp for what Eloy's role could be in the tournament.

That's it. He'll just platoon with O'Hearn. That's how you get the most out of him. Mayyyyybe a start in RF if Tony needs a break.

"ceiling".  Not expecting.  I'm expecting him to be a vet bat DH vs LHP with just putting up his .814 OPS that he's done this year.  That's all I'm expecting.

That's all the Orioles need because O'Hearn can't hit southpaws and Eloy can be the perfect compliment at DH and as a right handed pinch hitter.

Well, I think that’s right.  But I think this is really an acknowledged shot in the dark.  Jimenez has a .066 ISO vs. LHP on the year, and actually has a better OPS vs. RHP than LHP in his career.   He’s not some lefty-mashing specialist.
