Update:

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said Friday the ailing ace has fraying in his pitching shoulder. Doctors are reviewing Bedard's second MRI exam of the summer to determine the next step, with more definitive word expected this weekend.

That's not good...

Rotator cuff stuff?

Not good indeed. If they were in a pennant race I would give him a cortizone shot and pray.

Bedard is looking like it will be lucky if he ever regains his health.

Did Bedard have a motion that people could of predicted this stuff? I never really heard that he had strange mechanics before.

Wow, they are still insanely upset over the Bedard trade over there on the Mariners boards...

It must be of some comfort to Seattle fans that the Orioles are a full 13 games behind the Mariners, who are 5.5 games in back of the Red Sox in the Wild Card race.

Despite the Erik Bedard trade, the Mariners are looking down on the Orioles ... at a considerable distance.

For now maybe, but not for long.

And the M's will be watching the playoffs the same place as the O's this year. Their homes.

I look forward to re-visiting this topic when the Orioles achieve a winning season.

Since the departure of Seattle GM Bill Bavasi, the Mariners have been restocking the farm system via trades, this year's draft (three of the first 33 picks) and another fine year of international signings.

Trades also have resulted in an upgrade over Adam Jones in centerfield, a closer who has converted 27 of 30 save opportunites and a slew of defensive standouts.

It should be interesting to see what team reaches the postseason first.

I beg to differ (great song by the way). I think the M's have made tons of moves this year to put them potentially in a great place for the future, all the while fielding a pretty good team now. It would be amazing if the M's somehow pull it out this year, after trading Washburn.

I think the AL West is going to be a very tough division, top to bottom, for the next few years. The Angels are always good the way they are built, but yet they are the ones with the most concern going forward. Texas has tons of good prospects coming through. The A's have good pitching prospects, as well as some others here and there, so they should be good as well. Seattle has filled the minor leagues, plus put some good young players out there to play. They got rid of dead weight -- and will be getting rid of more soon.

Granted Baltimore will be doing the same thing. So, I do see that improving over the years, especially if they can fill the holes that they know they have. The only issue I see is can they back it up. Do they have the depth to carry them in the AL East. I think they will compete, to an extent, but it is also hard to compete against money. That is one thing that will leave the AL West to a better division in some senses -- 4 good teams, not a whole lot of money.

Oh by the way they actually have pitching, some of the best in MLB, something the O's can only aspire to have.

    • The only reason Ort is still on the 40 man roster is that they have not needed his spot yet.   And with 38 on the 40 man roster that may not be the reason he is DFA.   He will probably go to make room for Held, McGough or Richmond.
    • This is no big deal ….He has a right to have an opinion. I believe Holiday was called up too soon. I  also believe the front office was pressured by Hollidays father and agent.
    • When he first came up, his slider was very mediocre and only really used as a get me over change of pace. Now it seems like a weapon. I wonder if he went to school with Professor Bradish for that.
    • Yeah, kinda why I asked the question. That seems real lofty for a comparison.
    • After a really disappointing April that saw his ERA balloon to 7.78, Alex Pham has found his bearings in May, allowing 3 ER in 14.1 IP, allowing 8 hits and 4 walks while striking out 17.   Yesterday Pham allowed a run on 2 hits and a walk in 4.2 innings, striking out 7.   53 of 72 pitches were strikes.  The sole run charged to Pham scored when reliever Kyle Virbitsky allowed a 2-out double to the first batter he faced after relieving Pham in the fifth.    Due to the poor start, Pham’s ERA still rests at an unimpressive 5.29, but he’s definitely been headed in the right direction.  Also, he’s struck out 40 batters in 34 innings.
    • I can’t emphasize enough how stupid that rain delay was.  No rain at all for 45 minutes, then two hours of light mist, the kind that teams play through all the time.  I was standing near the kids play area during most of the delay and believe me, that rain didn’t deter any kids from using the playground equipment for two hours. Then, 15 minutes before the game is going to start, the grounds crew is watering the infield.  What? The game itself was not worth the wait, needless to say.   But what annoys me most is the complete lack of communication during these delays.  How about letting the fans who are there know what the thinking is about how long the delay will be?  How about an update every 30 minutes or so.   Nope, nothing.   Just a generic message on the scoreboard saying that the start of the game will be delayed to to the “threat” of inclement weather.   My phone was showing .05” of rain expected in the next six hours.  Some threat! On the bright side, the team did announce that ticket holders would be given vouchers that could be used for a Monday - Thursday game.  That was the least they could do.
