Nats To Fire Rizzo... Maybe

Uh, wow. Go in another direction for permanent GM, maybe. But FIRE Rizzo? Not even offer him a chance to stay with the organization? That's not right.

If that report is true, the winner in all of this is Jed Hoyer. Unlike Rizzo, he'll still have a job at the end of the day, and unlike DiPoto, he doesn't have to go run an organization that treats people like this.

Hopefully not true. That's low-rent. Edes generally has good sources, but he has missed before.

It may not be "right", but hiring in a new guy and demoting the interim GM to be his assistant isn't necessarily the way to get the new guy off to a good start. One of the reasons why Indians assistant GM Chris Antonetti refused to interview for the GM position in St. Louis was reportedly because the interim GM, John Mozeliak, had been promised by ownership that he'd remain with the club. With Tony La Russa also rehired and with Jeff Luhnow, head of player development, also firmly ensconced, Antonetti apparently felt that his subordinates would have more leverage than he would.

Yeah, that situation had "Lee Mazzilli" written all over it. It's important to have the power to clean house if you want to and to bring in people you trust.

That said, I don't see why they see a need to fire Rizzo immediately. Nothing is going to happen in September. Let him finish the year and then ask him to resign. I guess they think DiPoto will be a popular guy this offseason.
